Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared

"Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared" originated as a horror webseries on YouTube, it follows three main puppet characters with no canonical names (referred to by fans as "Yellow Guy', "Red Guy" and "Duck"), the main characters live a never ending nightmare loop being stuck permanently on June 19th 1955. The webseries lasts 6 episodes (to represent June being the 6th month), every episode the main characters are taught by a teacher like a children's educational show, however usually is twisted into something a lot more sinister where the character end up tortured, dead, kidnapped, or just let down by these teachers. The clock teacher in episode 2 mentions that "the future doesn't exist", hinting towards the fact they are stuck on one day forever. The most humanoid of the main characters, Red Guy, is the most aware of their cycle and actively tries to escape it. At the end of the webseries, the day finally moves onto the 20th of June, indicating a break free from the pattern. However, this gives us false hope, as when the series returned as a comedy-horror series on TV, the characters are stuck again on 20th June.

While puppeteering is not something I'm interested in, the direction and story telling in Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared is greatly inspiring to my video work, especially in this project link to revolution/revolving.

The Walten Files

While I personally am not a fan of The Walten Files at all, I am able to see how this webseries is an influence to my work. The story to me is irrelevant as it is just a fanwork of of the story of Five Nights At Freddie's (game), however the media and horror to The Walten Files is very similar to how I like to create my work. The disturbing feeling the videos create and the media used (digital art, video/film, animation) is my favourite way to produce art.

Ghosttundra - Lacey's Games

Lacey's Games is a form of "digital horror", the modern relative of analog horror which incorporates the use of screen recordings, online websites, web games, etc. that has existed during the early 2000's - mid 2010's. Lacey's Games is a Youtube webseries made by Ghosttundra, who uploads videos as if they are playing through Lacey's Games, a collection of flash games that follows the life of Lacey and friends. These are uploaded as if Ghosttundra is just an archive channel for Lacey's Games instead of actually being the creator of the story. The videos get more disturbing as they go on, we learn that our main character Lacey is a victim of all forms of abuse from her uncle, a victim of stalking, she struggles with depression, anxiety, PTSD, pressures to succeed and suicidal thoughts. The episodes get more unhinged and scary as you watch on. In one flash game, you dress up Lacey to go see friends and go on dates however as the game progresses, you can hear Lacey whispering, begging you to not proceed as a stalker has been watching and planning on killing her for the past few days and she would be in danger if she left her house. It is greatly disturbing as the player has no choice but to proceed anyway.

Poppy Youtube channel is one of the earliest examples of digital horror I encountered. The channel features a girl named Poppy, each video strange, unsettling, disturbing yet bright and colourful. The weirdcore aesthetic and uncanny delivery of lines by Poppy just creates an uneasy feeling in the viewers. Recently, Poppy has stopped uploading strange videos and now is a musician but her music videos still have the similar sort of feel as her old videos.

Silent horror webseries using emo 2000s style drawing/animation, features horrifying metaphors around womanhood and the female experience. The story is a lot harder to piece together compared to other series. The series frequently delve into extremely upsetting and unsettling subjects within each video, including mental illness, death, depression, torture, and in at least one instance implied sexual violence.

Toby Fox Sketch Response

Response to the work of Toby Fox. This sprite comes from the neutral boss fight in Undertale and it is the only sprite to use real life imagery in the game. The rest of Undertale is a comforting pixel cartoony RPG, while this boss confronts the player with real life imagery including pixelated human faces, worms, flies ect which I feel like does a great job at unsettling the player.

Started thinking about characters, had an idea of an ant character that wore a tie as a part of work or school uniform. This character never developed into anything in the final piece but I think it's a great concept to have still. I feel like the concept compares the life of an ant to our own human lives and how similar they are.

An ant mill is an observed phenomenon in which a group of army ants, separated from the main foraging party, lose the pheromone track and begin to follow one another, forming a continuously rotating circle. This circle is commonly known as a "death spiral" because the ants might eventually die of exhaustion.

I use this phenomenon in my work as a metaphor for how our society functions and how for most people, everyday is a repeat of the day before, an inescapable cycle everyday for the rest of our lives.

I link this to my experiences with mental health and gender, as I personally struggle with a constant everyday cycle but I also tend to shut myself in if I don't have a weekly pattern, and also how I feel like no matter what I do in terms of appearance and gender, society can never change and everyone hates trans people.

At the start of the project, I had this idea of linking revolving with the ant death spiral. I wanted to do a video piece as video/film is my usual favourite way of creating along with drawing/illustration.

I used mark making techniques I learned in the first year and oil pastels and mixing to make different colours. I believe the black and white of the mark making and ink is effective in creating the feel I wanted for my project.

During the project, it became apparent to me that I would not be able to create my plan for a video outcome or anything close to my original plan due to personal reasons causing interruptions to my college works.

If I could, I would've tried to create and animation video response to the revolution theme. I believe my theme of the ant death spiral would've been very effective with the prompt of revolution if I was able to stick to my original plan. My original plan for the prompt was to create a video set in the environment of an ant colony stuck in a death spiral, animated and illustrated by me and the horror of being stuck in the death spiral and how it is comparable to human life, it was supposed to be a sort of short horror film but with an awakening at the end where it switched from animation to videography and it would just be me living my own life happily as a transgender person with mental health issues that I have to live with everyday.

I am not satisfied with my final outcome, I wish I had the time and effort to do a video piece like first planned. Still, I had the room to make my piece more personal to my current situation and that was nice. I hope to create better pieces in future projects.
