Do you Know What Photosynthesis is?

The word photosynthesis is made up of two words. The words are photo and synthesis. Photo means light and synthesis means putting together. Plants do need food and do not have to wait on other things for it. Most plants make their own food when they need it. They do this by using sunlight and the process called photosynthesis.

Plants have to have carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight to survive and to provide food for themselves. The carbon dioxide come from the air and passes through small pores in the leaves. The water is absorbed by roots and passes through vessels in the stem and is on its way to the leaves of the plant. A green chemical in the leaves absorbs its sunlight.

The leaves of a plant is where photosynthesis takes place. These leaves are made up of a lot of little cells. Chloroplasts are tiny structures that are inside the cells. Each one contains this green chemical called chlorophyll which is why leaves are the color green.

The first step of photosynthesis is the chlorophyll absorbs the sun's energy. Next the energy that was absorbed is used to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. The oxygen then is let out from the leaves into the atmosphere. The hydrogen and carbon dioxide are then used to form glucose (food for plants).
