It’s essential almost in a big classroom. It’s something that you must teach the students though. Not just the words. In order for attention getters serve their purpose it’s important to discuss and model good listening for students. Praise students when you see them doing it. As the teacher, you can decide what behaviors you would like to reward and give students points when they do that behavior. There is also the option to remove points if there is a negative behavior you’d like to discourage. 

In my experience, it’s going to save you a lot of time and stress if you make a plan about when/in what circumstances you are going to reward or take away points from students. Especially primary age kids get very competitive about the points and will be watching you like a hawk to see when you give points. They will also look for opportunities to ask for points too.  They are just trying to figure out the rules and what’s fair, but it’s best to have very clear rules for yourself and explain them to the students when you give or take away points.
