Pinkster was a religious holiday, for the Dutch. It was a day when they went to church and got a rest from work. It was brought into the New World in the 1620s and became an African American holiday somewhere between 1790 and 1810. On this day, the Africa community elected a Pinkster king, the enslaved Africans got a day free of work, and they got a chance to mock their masters and get out their anger towards the masters.

Delaware used Indians as slaves. However, the diseases the Swedes had brought had killed many of the Indians. The decline in human resources forced them to start bringing blacks. The first black slave came from the West Indies in 1639. Black slaves, however, were not widely popular in Delaware until the Dutch took over.
