My favourite music experience at the moment is listening to George Michael's concert documentary from Palais Garnier in Paris - available on Youtube. The concert is absolutely beautiful and accompanied by such interesting comments and insights from the MAN himself. I am a huge fan of George Michael - it is a true tragedy that he is no longer here.

A record I can suggest for the list: Play Bach 1 Jacques Louissier (Spotify link here, but this can certainly be found on most platforms / Youtube) – Louissier is a French pianist who played many of Bach’s pieces rearranged for a jazz trio. It is fascinating to hear Bach’s pieces reinterpreted in such a playful manner, and I just find that it brings a lot of joy to listen to it 😊

o   Deutschland 83: which follows an East-German spy adventures in West Germany and beyond
o   The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, about a New York housewife who discovers she has a knack for stand-up comedy and pursues a career in it in the 1960s

A history novel: The Century Trilogy by Ken Follett, which follows the story of German, British and Russian families throughout the 20th century.

A more serious tv series: Babylon Berlin, mixing detective stories with politics against the background of the late Weimar Republic

I would recommend “Mr. Ibrahim and the Flowers of the Koran” by Eric-Emmanuel Schmidt. It’s a touching story of young man in-between quite diverse worlds and with some surprises.

I would recommend Rodham by Curtis Sittenfeld.  It’s a “reimagining” of the life of Hillary Rodham Clinton.  I hadn’t expected to like it, not being sure if I wanted to spend much time with Ms Clinton. But I found myself drawn in by the character that’s portrayed, the challenges for a woman in a man’s world and the complex relationship with Bill.  Just a really good read!

I would highly recommend a book called Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe. It is a gripping account of the history of the Northern Irish troubles since the 1960s (topical, right?). It is a real page-turner - although it was quite distressing at times, I could not put it down. It won the Orwell Prize for political writing.

I would recommend Netflix mini-series “Unorthodox”: The story of a young American-Jewish woman who grows up in an orthodox part of contemporary Brooklyn and escapes to Berlin, where a gripping story unfolds around her confrontation of an entirely new reality, her passion for music and her past. Like almost no other series I have seen of late, this story shows and pulls you into a different world and raises deep questions about culture and religion. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

I recommend: “The Path to Power: The Years of Lyndon Johnson” by Robert A. Caro. This is the first volume of the big opus on President Johnson. A fantastic political biography and great prism into US history. I loved the audible version read by Grover Gardner.
