Why did the Europeans imperialize China?

The Europeans imperialized China for a few reasons. One reason was for valuables. The Chinese had products most desired by Europeans such as silk, porcelain, tea, spices and precious stones. Another reason they wanted China imperialized was for money and power. With all the valuables China has as well as the important trade routes such as the silk road it would be a Europeans dream to have all the wealth flowing through the silk road. And the thought of owning the powerful country of China was also very important to them.

The Europeans used several different tactics to gain power in China. One way was war. The opium wars of the 1830s brought much power to Europe in China after they conquered the Chinese with superior warfare technology. General acts of terror, violence, and mayhem were the Europeans way of getting what they wanted out of China well the Chinese were extremely overwhelmed with the advanced warfare put at their doorstep there was little to nothing they could do.

How did Europe maintain power in china?

The Europeans maintained power in China a couple ways. The first was treaties. The Nanjing treaty, one of the most influential gave Europeans possession of Hong Kong, 21 million ounces of silver, and the right of extraterritoriality or the right of not having to listen or essentially be above local law in the country. The second way they maintained power was spheres of influence. A sphere of influence is an area in one country where another country such as European countries have power over and dictate what is going on in that area which would give a lot of help in maintaining power.

The Chinese gained most of their independence from rebellions. One of the most famous rebellions being the boxer rebellion. "The Boxer Rebellion was an uprising against foreigners that occurred in China about 1900, begun by peasants but eventually supported by the government. A Chinese secret society known as the Boxers embarked on a violent campaign to drive all foreigners from China." this is a short quote from Britannica explaining what and who the boxers and the rebellion was about. There were many more rebellions after the boxers.

what were the the impacts of China's colonization?

There are several effects of colonization in China. One was religion. "London Missionary Society establishes Hong Kong College of Medicine, which later became the University of Hong Kong. First western institute of higher education in Hong Kong" this is a quote from British imperialism in China guided history. This shows how religion and western education was plugged into China as a result of colonization. The second affect would be war and the casualties that were made. 18 to 20,000 Chinese soldiers were killed during the opium wars. This had a very large affect on China itself.
