A social change in travel and tourism is in the grey market which is the older people living longer due to better healthcare. Because they are feeling healthier they are able to go on more holidays. the grand market has more disposable income this is because they have more money left over they either have retirement money or they have payed of all there mortgage. The older generation get the advantage on off-peak prices they can go on holidays whenever they like and its also a lot cheaper because they don't have any children and also because they don't have to book holidays in the busy seasons (summer holidays) the grey market are an important customer type as tour operators can earn more money as a result there are some tour operator's that only specialise in holidays for over 50s an example is SAGA. .

Millennials are changing the travel and tourism industry by the use of social media. Another change is having children later in life because of this they are able to get out more they also have more disposable income . staying in education for longer this is making education more important so you can get a good job and a good job means good money and good money means your able to go on more holidays.

Makes up around 18% of global bookings, solo travel is becoming more popular and has increased by 7% in the last year. 38% of those travellers will have travelled solo and will do it again. hotelscan.com noticed 170% increase in the last 12 months for those looking to book a room for themselves with popular destinations including Thailand, Peru, Sydney, Portugal, Vietnam. Even cruise operators have had to adjust their offerings to cater for higher number of passengers travelling alone. Norwegian cruises adapted to this trend by launching studio rooms especially designed for single travellers.

In 2016 the UK voted to leave the European union. This has affected the travel and tourism in many ways such as different coloured passports, Holidays becoming more expensive(mobile roaming). UK tourists are no longer able to use EU- fast track passport control and customs lanes, length of stay will be affected for holiday makers and business travellers to stay in the EU for longer then 90 days. This affects the people that work over broad if they do not have a visa. Immigration procedures will take longer.

Covid 19

Covid 19 was founded in 2019. This affected the travel and tourism industry massively. People weren't allowed to travel and where to isolate. This affected airlines for example TUI had lost (2.7b). people where then told to rebook there holiday at a later date. There where job losses British airways cut up to 1200 jobs due to collapse in business. Attractions where closed or they where only open to few people. Countries have imposed quarantines, entry bans to the most affected countries. Vaccines affected travelling because if people didn't have it they wasn't allowed to travel. Countries imposed quarantines and entry bans to most countries and before going on holidays you were to be tested. Overall 91% of holidays in July & August 2020 were changed or cancelled due to the pandemic.

Around 83 percent of people are now booking holidays/travel arrangements online. Our mobile phones have become tour guides you can locate travel agency's, best restaurants and much more. Its by our side during the entire purchase journey. according to trip adviser 45% of users use their smartphone for everything including there holiday. Technology has evolved so much that when you go out to eat your able to order at the table your seated at. Another way its evolved is that online checking is now online and your able to use your phone at airports. Hilton hotels have introduced an app where customers are able to click what room they want and they are able to virtually see there room this is good so they can see how big they want there room. This is gonna be common with business travellers as their expectations are higher.

Navigate

Navigate is a platform that is used with TUI.

This app allows customers to book photoshoots, exertions and booking tables at a specific restaurant. Navigate also shows customers their itinerary and the cruise timetable of what's happening that day and where to go to take part. This benefits majority of passengers because its easy access and its very helpful however elderly might not know what to do or how to access the TUI app as some elderly are not too familiar with phones

Wifi on aircraft

Airlines have now started putting Wi-Fi on there aircraft. They have realised the feature is important to their customers. Wi-Fi is available in the air depending on the airline customers are flying with like British Airways they offer a smaller fee but there are a handful of airlines that have free Wi-Fi onboard, Emirates and Turkish airlines. This can benefit some people but Wi-Fi may not be great.
