Soon after Stalin came to power he came up with a collectivization plan. This plan was to get rid of private farming. He got rid of anything privately owned. He had the people of the Ukraine give up their livestock, land, and farming equipment. Stalin believed that in doing this he could feed all the people in the cities and factories and gain money from selling to other countries. Stalin would use this money for institutionalization.

The people of the Ukraine refuse to work on collective farms. So to get rid of rebellion Stalin decided to get rid of the Kulak's. The treatments of the Kulak's were terrible. They were treated brutally by the secret and Stalin's troops. Eventually anyone who resisted the collectivization was considered a Kulak and arrested.

An order is placed that tells the farmers and their families that if they took any food they would be arrested and killed. Also a military blockade was put in place to prevent the transport of food to the people of the Ukraine. The blockade also prevented the people from leaving to go and find food. Then some soviet activists had searched through the towns to find all of the extra food that was hidden in houses and eventually they took all the food that was left in the houses. Stalin wanted to deliver a horrible blow to the Ukrainians.
