Erikson's developmental idea of Trust Vs. Mistrust sets the stage for all other development in a person's life. The idea of Trust Vs. Mistrust shows an infant whether they can trust the world around them or not. When I was little I would cry and either my grandma or my mom would pick me up. They would sing me songs and rock me back and forth until I calmed down. I got so comfortable with those people that eventually I would just sit with them while they did something and I'd be content. The book states, "Baby develops sense of whether world is safe or good." I learned from a young age that I could trust the world and the people around me.

Autonomy Vs. Shame/Doubt

Autonomy Vs. Shame/Doubt is the idea of a child being self sufficient and independent instead of being guilted and shamed. When I was getting potty trained they used positive reinforcement and taught me how to be independent enough to go the bathroom myself. This is one of the earlier steps that I took towards independence and without this step I would feel shame. According to the book, an ideal situation is Autonomy over shame and/or doubt. It says, "Child develops a balance of independence and self sufficiency over shame and doubt."

Initiative Vs. Guilt

Initiative Vs. Guilt is the point in life where children become more curious but also learn that not everything is socially acceptable. When I was 3, I had to learn that cussing was not something that I was allowed to do. I was punished and consequently didn't do it for the rest of my early childhood. I picked it up from my mom and worked it into my vocabulary because the work peaked my interest. According to the book, "Preschool children can do more... they are learning that some of the things they want to do meet social approval, whereas others do not."

In this picture I went to a baseball game with a friend and their family. This was one of the first times I ever went without my family. Industry Vs. Inferiority is when a child or adolescent does an activity apart from their family, such as hanging out with friends or doing a sports practice. Through this outing and many others I am now very independent and able to function outside of my family. However if a child were to get rejected they would feel inferior to everyone else via rejection.

Identity Vs. Role Confusion is a point that you reach in adolescence to early adult hood, where you start to outwardly express yourself. When I wanted to express myself I got highlights and started wearing more scandalous clothes. I developed my sense of self and I knew my identity. According to the book, "In order to become a unique adult with a coherent sense of self," you need to go through this stage of life.

Intimacy Vs. Isolation is the stage in a persons life where they decide between intimacy with another person or they seclude themselves alone and become self absorbed. I have experienced this in my life with my boyfriend of 2 years. In this situation I chose to be intimate with him instead of pushing everyone away. According to the book, a person who does not experience intimacy, "may suffer from isolation or self-absorption."

Generativity Vs. Stagnation is a point in a person's life where they decide to either settle down and start a family or they stay by them self and may feel unsatisfied with their life. I am yet to hit this point in my life but once I get there I imagine myself settling down and creating a family and buying a forever house. According to the book, those who do not "succeed" this stage in life may "feel personal impoverishment."

This is the final stage in Erikson's Theory. This is the time in a person's life where they are typically elderly and have come to terms with the idea of death. I am very emotional so I don't think I will do this stage very well when I get there, which would result in anxiety of the inevitable. The book defines this stage of life as the "acceptance of own life, allowing acceptance of death."
