What was particularly valuable to you? Why?
Meeting everyone was very valuable to me since it gave me the chance to talk to them face to face and hear what kind of people I'm in a class with.
What didn't work as well?
The directions weren't very clear. I had no idea that we were supposed to ask the names of the people we were interviewing and get so much information. I thought we were just asking them three questions. Also, the time was a bit too long for interviewing two people.
What did you learn that you didn't know before?
I learned that you could expand a question. For my questions, I just asked it and listened to what the person said and moved on. But when we shared as a group, I found that many of my peers actually delved into conversation and asked additional and followup questions based on what they heard.
What individual or team experiences did you have that stand out?
My partner and I worked quite well together so that was an experience that stood out. We planned the interviews quite well, as we alternated between who was interviewing and who was recording.

What was particularly valuable to you? Why?
It was valuable to me to work with my partner. Approaching strangers by myself to interview them would have been a traumatic experience but with a partner, it makes it less scary.
What didn't work as well?
The time for the design activity seemed too long. A lot of the time was spent waiting to transition to the next activity.
What did you learn that you didn't know before?
I didn't know that designers would interview their users for specific stories before they begin to design a product. I didn't know that designers were so personal with their users since I had thought that designers usually make products for a group of people and therefore make their own assumptions about the population.
What individual or team experiences did you have that stand out?
An team experience that stood out happened when my partner and I were trying to think of solutions to make someone wake up earlier. His proposed solution is to force them to have a lucid dream. It wasn't exactly a practical proposal but being willing to think beyond the scope of practicality may sometimes create an innovative product.

What was particularly valuable to you? Why?
The fact that we had another chance to improve our interview skills was very valuable to me. In that way, I had the chance to correct my questioning method and be able to physically carry out those changes.
What didn't work as well?
There were still some people who looked uncomfortable being interviewed and only gave one word answers. Even with follow up questions, they didn't seem willing to open up.
What did you learn that you didn't know before?
I learned that people in ESJ have more stress other than just schoolwork and exams. Last week, everyone we interviewed said their biggest stress was schoolwork and the answers didn't vary much. But this week, there were different answers such as transitioning from a different country and waiting future success.
What individual or team experiences did you have that stand out?
As a team, I found that instead of one person solely asking questions and one person solely writing, we liked to give our input in both roles. Sometimes when my partner was asking the questions, a follow up question would pop up in my head and I would chime in and vice versa.

What was particularly valuable to you? Why?
I felt like brainstorming and doing research on Temple Hills before getting there is an important step. That way we won't go in cold and next week, we will be more prepared to get the answers we're looking for.
What didn't work as well?
Sometimes when we shared the research and topics we've brainstormed, it became repetitious when every group had to share.
What did you learn that you didn't know before?
I didn't know that Prince George's County had such a low ratio of population to physicians. I'm now interested in why that is the case.
What individual or team experiences did you have that stand out?
What stood out to me as an individual was the activity we did in the first of class. I realized that I didn't like staring at someone for a long period of time.

What was particularly valuable to you? Why?
The pizza we had for lunch was very valuable. It made the interviews out in the cold worth it for me.
What didn't work as well?
The weather was very cold and I didn't dress for the weather. My hands were freezing as I was taking notes. The weather also made it hard to talk to people outside the stores since they were either in their cars or were rapidly walking somewhere warm.
What did you learn that you didn't know before?
I didn't know about the history of Mona Center. I found its history very interesting, how it was a restaurant then became a charity center by a Catholic organization.
What individual or team experiences did you have that stand out?
As a team, we were rejected a lot. That made our team come together and find a different approach and word our questions differently so that we can get good interviews. At the end, our success came in a rather unconventional way. William was able to speak French to someone who was more comfortable with that than English and they had a good interview.

What was particularly valuable to you? Why?
At the end of class, I helped to make the map of the Mona Center community. This was valuable for me because it allowed me to see where my classmates went and to see the whole layout of the town. It made me excited to hear the interviews my classmates had with the community as our team cannot capture the whole picture.
What didn't work as well?
Our team finished the assignments very quickly and were sitting there for a big portion of the time. This might have been due to the limited amount of interviews and information we had collected.
What did you learn that you didn't know before?
I didn't know the details of the design process. Today we covered the step "define" and I learned how the interviews and information collected could be dumped out and then sorted into different themes until finally, we could find the overarching problem in need of addressing.
What individual or team experiences did you have that stand out?
I thought the activity we did at the beginning of class proved a good point. The drawings between the vase and appreciating a flower were helpful in showing us how to think outside of the box.

What was particularly valuable to you? Why?
The brainstorming section of class was helpful to get our minds thinking about how we can move forward with the interviews we conducted at Mona Center.
What didn't work as well?
Our team sometimes got confused since both the professor and TA would approach one of our members and tell them to do the same thing. So sometimes, we almost duplicate a task.
What did you learn that you didn't know before?
I didn't know there were so many different ways to help brainstorm. From the video we watched near the end of class, you could mark ideas as appealing, feasible, and radical. Then based off these symbols, you could find the ideas that work out.
What individual or team experiences did you have that stand out?
The brainstormed ideas from my team members were very creative and different from what I had thought of.

What was particularly valuable to you? Why?
The video about prototyping was very valuable. Before watching the video, I thought prototypes were only products. But after watching the video, it put our project in a clearer light since I know how we can prototype our ideas.
What didn't work as well?
When we were picking out the ideas we liked best, there was some confusion over the instructions since all of us were voting for as many ideas as we liked possible. But after Portia came over to tell us we were only supposed to vote for two ideas, we had already wasted time.
What did you learn that you didn't know before?
I didn't know that prototypes can be categorized into three groups: role play, make-like or feel-like, and storyboard.
What individual or team experiences did you have that stand out?
When we were brainstorming for our prototype, we had to choose one idea. What surprised me was that my team was able to converge all the ideas we liked into a health fair. It was partly from hearing other teams share about doing a community event but the same idea worked out great for our team as well.

What was particularly valuable to you? Why?
It was valuable to me to gain feedback from the community. Their feedback can improve our project.
What didn't work as well?
My two team members came late and I went around asking people by myself. It was difficult asking people by myself instead of with a group.
What did you learn that you didn't know before?
I learned that the people in the community liked our idea.
What individual or team experiences did you have that stand out?
It was interesting that we were much more comfortable asking people in the community this time compared to last time. We agreed that it was much more harder asking people for information compared to sharing information with them.
