Not everyone understands what constitutes a fever. And I must confess that I was one of these people for a long time until I read fever temperature charts from the Amazrock editorial review.

Before I tell you about this fever chart, know that fever is not a disease. It is an indicator. In most cases, a high temperature is the body's way of fighting a virus or bacterial infection or responding to trauma or other medical conditions.

Everyone's body functions at a slightly different normal temperature, but the average is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, and any temperature above 100.9 F (or 100.4 F for children) constitutes a fever.

So, as per the chart,

- The range for normal body temperature is 36.537.5 °C (97.7–99.5 °F)

- The range for average normal temperature is 37.0 °C (98.6 °F)

- Medical fever is >38.0 °C (100.4 °F)

- The range for mild fever is 38.038.9 °C (100.4-102.2 °F)

- The range for high fever is 39.039.9 °C (102.2-103.8 °F) or higher

How to Take Your Body Temperature and Determine Whether You Have a Fever?

Body temperature can be measured in two ways:

1. Body temperature (temperature of deep tissues) which is measured through the mouth cavity, rectum, and ear canal.

2. The surface temperature (temperature of surface skin tissues) that is measured on armpit and forehead

Digital thermometers can be used to assess rectal, oral, and forehead temperatures. However, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, we should avoid using mercury thermometers (glass). They also advise parents to get rid of mercury thermometers in their homes to avoid accidental exposure to this poison.

A temperature can be taken through the mouth (oral), anus (rectal), armpit (temporal), or ear (tympanic). The temperature measurements, however, differ depending on which one you select.

In general, the following are the temperature results from the various fever measurement methods:

- The normal oral temperature is 98.6°F (37°C) on average.

- The temperature in the ear or rectal cavity is 0.5°F (0.3°C) to 1°F (0.6°C) greater than the temperature in the mouth.

- The temperature on the forehead (temporal) scanner is typically 0.5°F (0.3°C) to 1°F (0.6°C) lower than the oral temperature. When compared to ear or rectal temperature measurement, forehead temperature is considerably lower.
