Link
Dyslexia affects reading comprehension. It is an auditory disorder. The children have a difficult time with words. Just because they are dyslexic doesn't mean that they are stupid at all. It can be seen as early as pre-school. If children have difficulty sounding out words or are expanding their vocabulary slower than their peers, this is a sign of dyslexia. This then progresses to difficulty with matching letters to the sounds they make.

As well, not being able to count. Dyslexia often causes stress and anxiety for children because it makes school very difficult for them. Dyslexia can exhaust children trying to read. Taking a long time on work compared to their other classmates causes them to fall behind. Dyslexia can even cause so much stress that a child may get frequent headaches or stomach aches.

Link
Parents are very troubled when they find out that their child has a learning disability. There is a stigma with learning disabilities linked all the way to success later on in life. Having a child with dyslexia just means that their brains thinks a little bit differently than some other people. Dyslexia can also hold advantages, dyslexic people are able to find patterns easily and are creative. Pablo Picasso was dyslexic! Signs can be seen early and children can get help as early as possible.

Link
The most common ways of teaching include lecturing, testing, and activities. This may work for a lot of people, but not for everyone. Dyslexic learners use different strategies that work best for their learning style. When dyslexic children don't get help, they reach burnout very quickly. If there aren't many resources it is very difficult for those students to thrive. However, teaching core learning skills and expanding on them rather than memorizing, helps children with dyslexia.

He wasn't diagnosed until elementary school. He explains how his brain has disconnect from what he is reading. Tom explains how he would be put in tears due to frustration. His doctor explains that there are two parts of dyslexia. One that affects the recognitions of words and sounds, and another that impacts the reading of them. The most helpful way for him to learn was specialized learning. Multi sensory learning is a term used that means engaging multiple senses when learning.

One student mentions that he would flip his bed over in rage. The students themselves are feeling better after getting help. These students weren't seen as their test grades, at the program they are seen as bright with difficulties in writing and spelling. Educational psychologists are able to work with dyslexic students very well. One girl described her exercises as "just like a game really" . It's amazing how well these psychologists do with students.

After trying to read just a few sentences it was clear how frustrating it would be. This Ted Talk also gave the statistic that 1/5 children have dyslexia. This could be even more considering the undiagnosed cases. The prevalence is extraordinarily high. People with dyslexia have an affected frontal gyrus which causes the disconnect between what they see and what they interpret. The extra time students spend decomposing words makes them fall behind.

I also learned that some people, including school officials, have claimed dyslexia to not be real. This must be an awful feeling for the children, as well as their families. Dyslexia can range from mild to severe. The learning disability gives you a unique mindset that can be put to great use. Creativity is very high in people with dyslexia.

It is also important to let the students know that they are doing well also. This particular school is training more and more teachers to help dyslexic students. They are already including multisensory learning methods which work well for dyslexic students. They estimate that about 5% of students in each classroom have severe dyslexia. The teachers are looking for signs of difficulties and signs of dyslexia. Not only with writing and reading, but with retention of everything.

I chose this topic because I know it's a common learning disability. I had a very vague knowledge of dyslexia. I know have a much better understanding of it. I learned about just how common it is. It amazes me that 20% of people have it. An estimated 80-90% of students with learning disabilities have dyslexia. (Dr. Sally Shaywitz) I found it very interesting that there was a negative connotation with this learning disability. People think that this affects intelligence which is not true at all. I also learned that schools often do not have the resources to help these students. Many students see private phycologists which is expensive. This puts lower income students at yet another disadvantage.
