The Puritans originally came from England. They left their home, because people were feeling they were corrupting their churches. And they eventually came to the Americas to practice religion freedom. They were called the Puritans, because they tried to "purify" the Church of England from their Catholic practices. The Puritans arrived in the New World, also known as America by sailing. And they settled in the Americas around 1628-1630. A life of a Puritan in America was constantly busy, hard labor, and going to church. The Puritans ultimate purpose in starting over in the New World was to freely practice their religion.

The Salem Witch Trials was the most important event that happened in Puritan history. The purpose of the Salem Witch Trials were to accuse "witches" of witchcraft, everyone blamed witchcraft for making everything bad in the world happen. The Salem Witch trials began when two little girls began to have weird feelings in their mind and body, being possessed by the devil. The girls said that they felt pinches and stabbing pains in their bodies. The Puritans believed that the devil was at work. The little girls blamed witchcraft of their problems, accused certain females and males of committing witchcraft and creating spells. After this, many people and puritans started to accuse women and men of witchcraft when something bad was happening in their life. In total, about 20 people were killed, and 150 were jailed. That is why the Salem With Trials began.

The Puritan culture was home to many important people. The most important person in Puritan culture, in my opinion, is John Winthrop. John Winthrop was the first leader of the Puritans, when they set sail to the Americas in 1630 on board the Arbella. John Winthrop wanted to change the Church of England into pure Christian beliefs. John Winthrop basically taught the Puritans their beliefs and punished his followers if they did not follow God, and if they committed sin. Winthrop is basically considered the founding father of the Puritans. Winthrop is considered important in Puritan culture, because Winthrop was the leader of the Puritans when they set sail to America. Winthrop also formed the governmental structure of the Puritan colony that settled in Massachusetts. Another important figure in Puritan culture is the Puritan known as Roger Williams. Roger Williams was a Puritan religious leader that believed the separation of Church and State. Roger Williams believed that Puritans should have religious freedom. Williams basically rejected the ideas of most Puritans. Williams is considered important, because he was one of the first Puritans to reject the belief that you must follow God strictly. Williams was banished from his colony and moved to Providence. Williams tried to change the beliefs of most Puritans. The last and final important Puritan that I could find was Anne Hutchinson. Anne Hutchinson was a female Puritan that also rejected the common Puritan belief. Anne believed that the common Puritan belief was based on salvation, not faith. Anne was also banished from Massachusetts, and started her own colony in Portsmouth. Anne also tried to change the minds of many puritans. Anne Hutchinson is considered important in Puritan culture, because Anne Hutchinson was the first Puritan women to oppose and reject the ideas of the Puritans. Anne Hutchinson opened the eyes of many Puritans, which lead to many people following her beliefs. Those are 3 important and memorable Puritans.

The Puritans produced large amounts of literary work. Some literary works like drama is forbidden, because it is against their religion and authority. They mainly produced poetry. A well known poem called "L’Allegro" was written by John Milton around the 1600's. The theme of the poem was contemplation and thought. Another important writing is "The Pilgrim's Progress", which was wrote by John Bunyan. It was mainly based on religion. And lastly, "The Sun Rising," which was written by John Donne around the 1600's. It was a very short poem, and the first stanza started off with him in bed with his lover. Most of the literary work from Puritans were from letters and journals kept for centuries.

The Puritans found many things to be sacred and important. The Puritans obviously found God important, because Puritans believed that God made a contract of agreement with them. Puritans found the scriptures set out by God as the most important item of their religion. They believed that their lives had to revolve around the scriptures set out by God. Puritans wanted to parish the sins set out by the English in the Anglican Church. Puritans main goal in life was to live by the church and to avoid sin. Church was mandatory to all Puritans who lived in the colony. Puritans tried to reform the Anglican Church. Puritans expectations when it came to how people should live their lives were simple. Puritans had to live their lives by God, Church, and the scriptures. Their expectations were to live a life without sin, when someone did commit a sin, they would be punished in gruesome ways. Those are the beliefs and values of the Puritans.
