Today media have normalized the presence of women in the political environment (Joshi, Hailu & Reising, 2020, p. 692). Despite this positive increase in diversity over the last few years, negative stereotypes persist. The main groups that can be distinguished are Anglo men, Anglo women, minority men and minority women. Minority women in politics suffer from more negative media coverage than any other groups (Haraldssona & Wängnerudb, 2018, p. 524). The most common stereotypes are that they do not traditionally belong to the political environment, they are mainly competent on issues related to the education of children, and that they only focus on topics connected to race, immigration, and social equality (Gershon, 2012, p. 108).

Furthermore, it was highlighted that minority congresswomen also suffer from much lower media coverage than their Anglo counterpart or men (whether they are Anglo-Saxons or part of a minority) (Gershon, 2012, p. 115).

Another significant issue is determined by the objectification of women's bodies and the judgment on their appearance. A study found that the sexism and the representation of women in different countries is strictly correlated with the number of women in power (Haraldsson and Wängnerud, 2018, p. 528).

Methodology: Semiotic analysis

The method of analysis chosen is semiotic analysis. It is based on four images, the title of each article and their captions, published by the New York Times (centric newspaper) regarding the controversy that arose between AOC and Mr Yoho. The sample under analysis consists of four articles published between 7/19/2020 to 7/30/2020 on the newspaper's website, sorted by relevance and analysed in order of appearance.
Through it, the aim is to describe both images and words and give them meaning (O'Shaughnessy and Stadler, 2012, p. 131). This meaning is generally interpreted in the say way by people who share the same understanding of the signs.
I will therefore examine Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's imagines to investigate if she is represented stereotypically and through sexism.

Preliminary Findings

My preliminary results highlight that the media representation of Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is surprising different from the expectations. In the photos analysed, she is represented as a strong and competent woman.
The risk of objectification of the congresswoman's body does not occur in this case in any photos.
In one image, she is portrayed as slightly emotional. Still, it is possible to deduce that this element only serves to transmit her beliefs and principles.
There are, however, some slight references to stereotypes (her hands that move and are a central element in three of the four photos).
Therefore, AOC is represented by the NYTimes as a confident and determinate congresswoman in every image.
