Female Heat Cycle

On average female dogs come into heat about twice a year or every six months, although it varies from dog to dog. Heat cycles can last about two to three weeks for most dogs. "Heat" should be considered to begin with the first signs of vulvar discharge, or when the female begins licking or paying attention to her vulva. The vulva will begin to appear swollen. There will also be blood coming from the vaginal region. It ends when all discharge ceases and the vulva has returned to its normal size.

Premating (courtship) behavior begins when the male first picks up the scent of an estrous bitch. Apparently the odor can travel great distances. Dogs have been found at the home of an estrous female over 5 miles. The male will smell and lick the females vulva. If a female is interested in male she will become very playful. If the male is not in the mood the female might start to hump him or other females to signal she is ready.

Pg. 134, Fig 9.8- Female Mate Preferences, Principles and applications of domestic Animal Behavior

For most females, the best time for breeding is between the tenth and fourteenth day of oestrus. Following a successful mount, the male pulls his forelimbs in a behavior called clasping. This action helps prevent the female from crouching or moving away. Some males use an inhibited bite of the skin of the female’s neck, the nape bite, as they mount. After an intense 15 to 30 seconds of pelvic thrusts, the dog stops thrusting, and ejaculation begins. Within a minute or so after the pelvic thrusts stop, while the tie is maintained, the male dog will dismount to one side, swing a rear limb over the back of the female, and stand facing in the opposite direction from the female
