I really like ArcGIS Survey 123 and can see this being highly beneficial to my learners, particularly in the Senior Phase. In the Scottish Higher and National 5 Qualifications, pupils have to complete a fieldwork project as part of their coursework. I think this field app would be highly beneficial for pupils when completing questionnaires. As normally pupils will complete the questionnaire and then create graphs to analyse of their data. However, this app simplifies and saves time with this as the graphs are created for them. Will definitely use this app with my pupils once they all have logins for ArcGIS.

I have used Survey 1,2,3 and Field Mapper before. We used Survey 1,2,3 in my GIS Class when we were gathering information at a cemetery. Before COVID 19 hit, we were also going to use it to assist California Borough and their state mandated (but not funded) traffic infrastructure database. This database would collect data on the following

1) Speed Control Signs

2) Parking Information Signs

3) No Parking Zones

We were just starting to plan the survey out (with pictures, etc) when COVID hit. We will try again this fall. I had an issue with the Field Mapper exercise, but I have used it before and we are actually talking about using it in a somewhat similar fashion to the exercise. Every year the students complete a cleanup of a local watershed, so we were talking about creating a field mapper app not only to map the data, but also create database of several years of data to help implement possible changes. For example, this location seems to have many tires in it every year. We might be able to ask PENNDOT to put a taller barrier in this area making it harder to dump the tires (just an idea). I was so impressed with the Quick Capture app. You can create data (and the app) so easy and then show students the power of the data on the map. I am thinking this would be great in my Introduction to Geography class. Unlike the Survey 1,2,3 or Field Mapper the students will not have to worry about dropdown menus, etc., they can just choose an item and take a picture. Even though our campus is not that big, I could divide it up. For example, students could record data around the building they have the most classes in or ask the athletes to record data around their athletic complexes, etc. On a side note, I completed the exercise (it was extremely straightforward and easy to follow) and my son saw it on my phone and wanted to try it out. I think if it were not so hot out here, then we would still be collecting data ;^) - Tom Mueller

I like the idea of students quickly and easily entering data in the field rather than collecting paper and pencil and adding those upon return (although in some circumstances, that would have value too). I would like to use the field mapping for our monthly bird walks.

I have used Survey123 in the past for student data collection. It worked well enough but after completing the Quick Capture tutorial I will use this tool for several reasons. First, it was really easy to create a feature layer and customize the attributes and visualization within ArcGIS Online before connecting to the capture app. Second, the quick capture tool creates a slick and easy to use interface for collecting data. One button/click data entry is great. When done previously in Survey123, it was a bit cumbersome to answer even a few questions in survey form to add a data point. Quick capture lets me do all the background work to make it quick and easy to submit data to a group project. The lesson I have in mind involves mapping the location of litter around our high school. I have students map the locations of Garbage Bins as well as every individual piece of Litter. We then analyze the patterns in litter locations and compare it to Bin locations to see if there are relationships between. Another situation I plan to use this is in an Environmental Science class for mapping biodiversity. I imagine creating quick capture buttons to cover different groups of organisms such as birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, plants, fungi etc.
Great tool !

I really like the QuickCapture app, which I can see as a really valuable tool for engaging our younger pupils in fieldwork. The data entry is really easy and I envisage using it for litter surveys around school and for doing a recycling survey with an eco-group in preparation for creating some whole school resources around climate change and the COP-26 conference (I'm based in Scotland). I really like how it's possible to do the prep. work for the presenting the results so in theory, within a lesson, I could send pupils out around the school to do a survey and by the time they return to the classroom a map would be ready to analyse there and then!
Like Eilidh C the Survey 123 app is really useful for our Senior Phase pupils in collecting fieldwork for their exam coursework. It easily allows pupils to pool their data and create graphs to show their results.

I have used Survey123 a lot in the classroom over the course of the past year or two. For example, I have integrated its use into the S2 Development topic. Pupils are issued with a case study country. They input data about their case study country into a survey and as they submit , pupils can see all inputs on the map attached to the survey, allowing them to make comparisons between their own case study and their class mates.

While I have gotten used to the workings of Survey123 over time, it can be use time consuming and cumbersome to use. I really like how Quick Capture is intuitive for pupils to use and for me to set up. I'm looking forward to using it for data collection. I imagine using it as part of a small field skills topic where junior pupils are asked to select a suitable location for a new seating area in the school grounds.

Above all else, I really like how these apps save time in the classroom. Pupils love to spend a long time colouring in graphs which delays the analysis of data meaning we often lose momentum. Pupils can get on with analysis pretty much immediately.
