We need to share a common culture because we are a culture that sees each other everyday.
Culturally responsive behavior is a two way street, giving and taking along the way and finding what we have in common.  This is a way to build bonds and more importantly, trust.
A child cannot learn when they are not comfortable, that is the bottom line. In the beginning, I was pushed to teach them English and everything else was not as important. What I noticed was that I was having significant behavior  problems. When I began to change to include their home language and culture into my classroom, they started to thrive. They contribute to classroom discussions. They feel safe and happy. From my experience our district has often written off our bilingual students as low level learners and now that I am working with them, I  am constantly fighting against that idea. They are brilliant students. Being a dual language learner is a gift.
