Is there anything that shocked you?
Is there anything you expected?
How might this be helpful for educators as they begin their journey toward greater cultural responsiveness?

Although I strongly agreed with all of the statements in the form, but I feel this is a double-edged sword and the end game must be kept in mind. For instance, do we want to also include new experiences and new cultures that expose our students to the culture they find themselves in? SImilarly, do we want to lower standards to accomodate culture to the extent that it excludes students to the American culture they find themselves in.
We need to share a common culture because we are a culture that sees each other everyday.
Culturally responsive behavior is a two way street, giving and taking along the way and finding what we have in common. This is a way to build bonds and more importantly, trust.
A child cannot learn when they are not comfortable, that is the bottom line. To make a student feel comfortable you have to share who you are and find out who they are culturally so you can meet in the middle and join forces.

I have been teaching bilingual students in Irvington for a few years now and I have had to adapt my classroom and strategies tremendously. In the beginning, I was pushed to teach them English and everything else was not as important. What I noticed was that I was having significant behavior problems. When I began to change to include their home language and culture into my classroom, they started to thrive. They contribute to classroom discussions. They feel safe and happy. From my experience our district has often written off our bilingual students as low level learners and now that I am working with them, I am constantly fighting against that idea. They are brilliant students. Being a dual language learner is a gift. My students are confident and believe in themselves now.

It is important to know and understand our students' background. Knowing this is helpful to obtain class culture, build relationships, and hopefully more/better parental involvement. Students need to be comfortable in an environment that is more than likely different than what they are used to. Ms. Bradshaw

DM Sanders - When students feel supported they are most likely to engage depending on their temperment for the day. I do not agree with the thought that positive interactions will eliminate or produce fewer behavioral problems. I do believe it depends on the child and their home situation.
