When you tell a story, you set up a setting, characters perhaps, a theme and more. The multitude of factors within your story helps give the reader something to relate to, or something to like. As progression through your story takes its course, your reader will want to read more of what you have written to see what happens, perhaps what happens to the characters (if any at all), what happens to the setting, how the setting changes, and how the theme of your story plays a role in the world you have set up. People are naturally attracted to that of questions and mystery-things that are left open for interpretation or investigation, in which a reader will go out of their way to go further into your hook to find these answers to satisfy that need, and maybe be roped into the rest of what you have written, beyond the hook.

You may pick "Start by setting a scene," because you can put a picture in someone's head, but telling a story does the same thing. Because you're telling something no one has heard you can effectively set up the story. After all, this is what every author does. Your choice of words can greatly impact your writing, drawing the reader closer and closer. Someone may dread having to read an essay, but if you make things personal things get interesting. As humans we naturally find each other intriguing. Think of a time that what you were talking about didn't have to do with someone. Is it hard? That's because we love sharing stories about other people. We love hearing different sides, we love being able to imagine what the situation must have been like. With the use of imagery and the human mind's natural instinct, telling a story overall allows us to connect with the author, imagine the scenario, and indulge on the lives of others.

The scene that is started is left on a cliffhanger, which makes people want to know more about the situation. Readers don't often like to be left on edge, and will want to read more. If I had read a hook like this, my interest would be piqued because I would want to learn more about what is happening. Starting with this type of hook makes those reading want to continue reading to satisfy themselves. For example, no one likes when their favorite TV show ends on a cliffhanger, so when the new season becomes available, they eagerly watch it because they crave the satisfaction of knowing how the story ends--how it continues. Now this hook is definitely not as long as a TV show but it still has the same effect. People will often succumb to a hook of this caliber because it is basic human nature to be curious. And to satisfy this curiosity-to quench this thirst-the reader will have a desire to read more.
