The Midnight Library by Matt Haig has 298 pages and is a book about a girl named Nora who has many regrets in life in all this time, being a bad cat owner to Volts, not going to Australia with her friend, Izzy, and divorcing with her husband, Dan. I chose this book because it looked interesting, and I think it might even be funny and it actually is. I wanted to try 3 new books that I never knew about before and I think all of them might be fun to read(except for Less[by Sean Greer])

One day, Nora thinks some dark thoughts and finally decides to commit suicide. Right before dying, she suddenly appears in the Midnight Library. The library has all the possibilities in life Nora could have had, and also, Mrs.Elm, her old school's library. Mrs. Elm said that there is a library in the middle of life and death. The time was exactly at midnight, and she could go hungry, thirsty or even tired. But she knew she would get bored, so Mrs.Elm said that she should open the Book of Regrets. When she opened it however, she got lost in her own regrets as they exponentially grew as she got older."I regret not staying in The Labyrinths because I let down my brother"."I regret not staying in The Labyrinths because I let down myself". After Mrs.Elm stopped her, she asked Nora to open to a random page in the book of regrets(also saying that it was safe now) and going to the life where she did NOT regret the specific regret. After a few lives, Nora wished to go to a life where she was a good cat owner. Mrs. Elm accepted that and she went to the life where she wasn't a bad cat owner. But when Nora woke up in that life, Volts, the cat, was dead. Nora went back to the library to find Mrs. Elm to complain that Volts was dead. Mrs. Elm asked Nora to look in the Book of Regrets and turn to the last page. The regret "I regret being a bad cat owner" slowly faded away. Nora understood that going to these lives will make her regrets fade away. So, she asked for a life where she didn't give up. Where she didn't bring down her brother. Where she kept on swimming onto the Olympics. Where she was successful. Mrs. Elm rotated the library around, found the book, and gave it to her. Then, she went into that life.

Then, she asked for another life, and another, and another. Mrs. Elm implied that after she chose a life, she couldn't go back to the same life. But, Nora just ignored her. She asked for another life, and another. One life she was everything, one life she was nothing, another she was everywhere, but the other life, she was nowhere. She was everyone, she was no one. She was a professional dog walker, another one homeless. She just couldn't find the perfect life. Then she got lighted up with an idea. She asked for a life where she went out with Ash for coffee. When she asked for it, she was in a large house, with Ash, and her daughter, Molly. When Molly woke up to Nora, she said that she had a nightmare, and then Nora started a questionnaire game. After she was done with that however, in the back of her heart, she still felt that the Midnight Library was waiting for her.. But in that life, she had felt something that in none of her lives had experienced, the feeling of love. She loved Molly. She loved Ash. She loved her brother, Joe. But one thing ruined it all. Her own piano student had been caught as a criminal in that life. Then she was back in the Midnight Library, screaming , "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO".

Nora complained to Mrs. Elm, saying that the previous life was the perfect life, where she experienced love and sadness. Where she taught at Cambridge(yes, she is bri'ish) and lived in a large house with Ash and Molly. She asked for the closest variation for that life, like when she asked for tea instead of coffee in that date. Or when she planted other flowers in her garden. But Mrs. Elm shaked her head no. Right as she did that, something was happening. Time. Time was happening, in the Midnight Library, where it was midnight every time. A wildfire spread in the library, where infinite amounts of books were burned every second. Mrs. Elm choked out,"Get the only book that is not burned, and escape this library!" But every time she tried to reach a book, the fire engulfed it. The books were in ashes. Then she found the only book that wasn't on fire. It had a green cover, and she whipped out her pen, and started writing in it. She tried "I want to live." Nothing. "I want to start again." Still nothing. Then she wrote "I AM ALIVE". She got back to her root life, in a hospital, while the Midnight Library collapsed. The doctor told her that she was in a coma, and barely survived, her heart being stopped every few minutes. Her brother, Joe, was there, saying that he loves her and vice versa.

She went back to her school, and met a very old Mrs. Elm. She was starting to live life the way it should be.

This books tells the story of a woman in her thirties who, after suffering an overwhelming attack of hopelessness and despair, embarks on a journey to rediscover the meaning of life. First, she regretted. Second, she tested. Third, she was hopeful and trying to live the life. I would rate this book a 4.5/5, an excellent book, which I really recommend to a friend. This book is heartwarming that informs you of choices and regrets. This is one of my favorite books.

What is the conflict or problem of the story? Have you ever experienced anything like this?

The first problem is that Patrick, Veronica's grandson, was missing/unknown until an anonymous person mailed her and said that she has a grandson, with the address and how to travel there. The second problem is that she wants to research and go to Antarctica to research penguins there. But the people already there, penggroupforants, doesn't want her there. And they already hate her at her first day there. The third problem is that she wants to take an injured baby penguin in. But since penggroupforants hates Veronica and they don't encourage wild penguins in the lab, they want the injured one out. The final problem is that Patrick wants to stay at Antarctica, even though all his friends, his ex, and his grandma is back at home, he can't go both ways. So he just stays at Antarctica. I think I experienced the second one, because at my old school, no Koreans/Asians were there. So it was new for them to have an Asian at the school. I was hated and they wanted me to leave, so I went to a different school and now I'm here. So I guess that it is basically a variation of the second reason.

What is the most exciting or important part of the story? List 3 important events that lead up to that point.

First of all, the most exciting part was the discovery of Dr.Holtz's death and the mystery of Dr.Holtz's death. At the start of the book, the author says something before the book started, that Dashiell, or Dash for short, has eaten the most horrible food in the space, chicken parmigiana. It had been a block of precooked food that had been irradiated, thermostabilized, dehydrated, and a million other steps before it came to the moon. He was in the bathroom at 2:30 AM because of the revenge of the chicken parmigiana. Then he overheard Dr.Holtz talking to someone who didn't exist. He was listening and talking. Dash had thought that it might have been a phone call, but the camera feeds didn't say. Next, a rocket landed, which brought more people and scientists on the moon. One of them was Zan Perfonic. And she was talking to Dr.Holtz that night. Lastly, Garth Grisan, the murderer, was about to release all the oxygen in the base out onto the surface of the moon. Then they found out that Garth was the murderer, thanks to Dash, and finally resolved the book in an ending when Dash found out that Zan was an alien who was projecting herself into Dash's mind.

What is the conflict or problem of the story? Have you ever experienced anything like this?

When Dr.Holtz, probably the oldest and the smartest in all of MBA(Moon Base Alpha) died, that was the beginning of the climax, conflict, and problem at the same time. Right after he died, it wasn't until about 7 AM until his death was discovered. In hopes of proving Dash wrong, Nina, the base main commander, tried to lead Dash into doing other things like making video logs, introducing new lunarnauts, and playing with Violet, Dash's little sister. When Kira, a new moonie/lunarnaut, overheard Dash and Zan, the alien, talking, she asked to help. But there was a downside for her not helping. She would tell everyone on the base, including NASA. Dash knew he was going to be in trouble if everyone finds out, so he let her to help. Near the end of the story, when Dash found out the Garth Grisan, one of the most meek people on the base, killed Dr.Holtz, he said that he would release all the oxygen on the base. That was a big problem. When he was caught off guard, he almost released all the of oxygen in the base.

(If this was the back summary of a book then add this) Read this book to find what happened to them!

Absolutely funny and amazing book, ★★★★★ 5/5 book, would definitely recommend to anyone between 7-13. How does this knowledge influence your understanding of the book?

I know that this author likes to talk about a smart kid, who for some reason, in all of his books, has a girlfriend. I know that Stuart Gibbs likes to write about a kid who first got doubted about a crime, then solves it, then he gets basically no credit after he solves it, due to people covering up the story. After knowing this, I can easily conclude the introduction, climax, and conclusion, basically the whole book. Even though I don't actually know what will happen, I can easily guess the main story and climax of any book from this author.

A boy on a moon base who is still bored out of his mind gets in trouble with the moon base commander, but suddenly she disappears. She was in a large mystery, where she is dead or not, and the alien, Zan, comes and helps. I would of course recommend this book to another person, now any age, because this book is just purely good. This book is so fun, but is a just a hint more boring than the first book of the series.

This book, for me, was a total 5/5. A boy who was mourning over his grandfather's death, Rintaro, suddenly meets a talking tabby cat named Tiger. Together with a girl on some adventures, they work together to save books and people from their inevitable destiny, the death of books and the peoples' failure in life. I will recommend this book to all ages, as it is extremely great. It is fun and suspenseful, making the book have a balanced and simple structure.

I don't really like this book, only 1/5 stars. An old man who had gone over 80 days without a fish, is being despised by everyone and is being called unlucky. A little boy is the only one who believed in him, and after going more and more days without fish, he finally caught a dolphin and celebrated his success. This book, I would only recommend to older ages because this book is very advanced. This book is very complicated and has hard words. It is just commentary about what the old man is doing.

Although I didn't read the whole book, I can guess the summary & end of the book. My guess is that the book is a 3.7/5. It's 1914. World War I just started. People all over the Russian Empire are cheering for their emperor as they invade Austria-Hungary and the German Empire. But something goes terribly wrong. The well-trained Germans are starting to invade deep into the Russian Empire and the emperor & people are losing hope. One man called Vladmir Lenin starts a civil war after overthrowing the monarchy. He and his Red Army wins the war but loses significant amounts of territory due to the treaties, but the Soviet Union is proclaimed. Fast forward until the end of World War II. The three superpower allies, the United States, Soviet Union, and the United Kingdom were good "chums". But as time goes on, the superpowers' relations deteriorate. Read how they solve this problem.

The European Union(also an AVSI book by Oxford) is a 209 page long book about facts, history, and creation(and maybe the downfall) of the European Union. All of these AVSI books are nonfiction, and I chose this book because I thought it would be similar to the cold war.
