One thing that describes Beneatha Younger very well is the fact that her Nigerian boyfriend gives her the nickname of "Alaiyo". This roughly translates to "One whom bread-food-in not enough". Not only does this mean a lot to Beneatha but this also describes her perfectly. She is an independent, intellectual that does not need anybody but herself to succeed.

A physical trait that stands out with Beneatha is when she cut her hair into a short afro. She was very proud and felt beautiful because she was embracing her African culture. Although she was a bit pressured by her boyfriend to do it, she did it because she wanted to learn/embrace her culture, unlike the rest of her family.

She pulls the headdress off and looks herself at in the mirror and
clutches at her hair again and squints her eyes as if trying to
imagine something. Then, suddenly, she gets her raincoat and
kerchief and hurriedly prepares for going out.

An emotional/psychological trait that stands out with Beneatha is her emotional stress and beliefs when it comes to believing in God. Because Mama believes in God and has raised a household who are all believers, when Beneatha argues and states that she does not believe in God/does not believe God does anything for them, it brings conflicts between the two woman. This ambitious and strong-minded trait really stand out with Beneatha especially when talking about her becoming a doctor and her thoughts about God.

A symbol that represents Beneatha really well is the feminist symbol seen today. Beneatha definitely is the definition of a feminist and she embodies what every woman should look up to when it comes to being strong and independent. Not only is Beneatha determined to get an education but she also wants to become a doctor. Though her entire family does not think it realistic or ideal, she still is determined to do what she wants/needs to succeed in life.

The American Dream trait is also another thing that is related to Beneatha. Although her family is poor, somehow they are able to pay for Beneatha's college which shows the American Dream that no matter what situation one person is in, there is always a way to succeed in America by working hard. Although the odds are against her, Beneatha is convinced and determined to become a doctor and be a successful young black woman.

I
couldn't be bothered with that. I am going to be a doctor and
everybody around here better understand that!
