I observed a teacher speaking to boys who had a physical incident at lunch time. She kept shaming them as the class listened in. "we expect better than this of you", "you can do better than this", Your parents would be so disappointed", "You are grade six, you should be role models for the younger students".

She didn't listen to why they had a fight, there wasn't active listening to the students, just constant talking from the teacher. She had no idea why the boys were so upset that they took it to a physical level.

A few years ago when I was a child, sometimes me and my brother complain to our parents about other people in school, like teacher or classmates, they would compare us to others and ask why other children don't have so many problems and let us stop gossiping, just work on our own stuff. It's very frustrating. I think that can be a kind of roadblocks for us to seeking help to our parents because sometimes those stuff do matter!

He threw a marker at me and out of shock and I immediately said "get out" - ordering, directing, commanding- when reflecting on what happened I should rather have said "Zac, please can you step outside for a moment". We did attempt to have a restorative chat after I gave the rest of the class work to go on with but he was already so upset.
