Ancient Egypt developed in northern Africa. The region is distinguished by the Arabian and Libyan deserts. Also by the Nile river, which is one of the longest rivers in the world; it goes from Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean Sea. The Egyptians took advantage of the river flooding, because it was predictable and happened regularly. They were able to develop their agricultural practices around it.

During the floods the floodplain and delta was submerged by 1.5 meters of water. They called this yearly flooding, the inundation. After the floods, farmers where left with well watered soil, which helped their plants grow. The soil that was left behind is known as silt, it was brought from Ethiopian Highlands by the Nile. The farmers started planting in October because that's when the flooding was over. The crops were left to grow and were harvested between march and may.

Although the Nile flooding was predicable and calm, it was not always perfect. If the floods where high they could destroy canals; and of the flood was low it would be difficult to grow crops.

Egyptians kept written records by writing with hieroglyphics. They wrote on stone, clay, papyrus, (paper like product made from reed fiber).

The most important aspect of Egyptian agriculture was the yearly inundation. They had a good base for farming, their fields needed to be plowed and seeds needed to be planted. Along with water moved to different areas. Leading to the invention of the ox drawn plow, the heavy plow cut the furrows while the lighter plow came behind turning up the dirt.

Overall Egyptians seemed to be accomplished farmers; and they were lucky with their system of irrigation that prevented the solid from drying up. Thanks to the Nile river, they were able to create new things to help their farming easier and quicker. Leading to new and more advanced technology in the future.
