William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 at Stratford-upon-Avon. Shakespeare’s parents were John and Mary Shakespeare. John is a dealer in wool and belonged to a middle class. Young William attended the local Stratford Grammar School.

When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway and they had three children: Susanna, and the twins Judith and Hamnet.

From the year 1584 to 1592 we don’t have any records of Shakespeare’s activities and so this period is called “The Lost years”.

Then, Shakespeare seems to have been associated with several acting companies like “The Queen’s Men”. In the 1593 the theatres in London were closed because of the bubonic plague. During this time Shakespeare wrote sonnets, lyric poetry and private plays for his friends, and he got support from a young nobleman, the Earl of Southampton, to whom he dedicated his poems.

When the theatres reopened, Shakespeare became the main playwright in the most popular acting companies called “Lord Chamberlain’s Men”.

During the years 1594-1599 he composed several plays like “Romeo and Juliet” and “The Merchant of Venice”.

In 1599 he became part owner in the Globe, the most prestigious public playhouse in London.

Later, there was a period of darkness for Shakespeare and for his works. In fact in the year 1601 father’s Shakespeare died. He died on 23 April 1616, when he was 52 years old.
