The writers use of metaphors portrays the birds as being human like because of the actions he describes them accomplishing. This is displayed when the birds are described as having their "bones long sunk in". The semantic field of the word 'bones' can be skeletons which may imply that the birds are underfed as their 'bones' are visible, this further suggests that their owners do not care for them rightly. The verb 'sunk' suggests that the birds are falling and going to the bottom of the surface, which could be a battle ground, and the reader infers from this that they could have died or been injured, which is also shown in the quote 'dead'. Alternatively the verb could also signify that the birds are of a lower status as you can sink in status, and this further reiterates my previous point that they are not treated with respect or looked after properly. In addition the writer uses imagery to show the reader how elegantly the birds perform. While doing their job of being hunters the birds are defined as being 'weightless'. The adjective 'weightless' suggests that the birds are light and have no weight, which could insinuate to the reader that they find their job easy as they have no 'weight' to bear. Alternatively the adjective 'weightless' also has connotations of feeling free, so the birds could feel like they are not being held captive and do enjoy their job. Moreover, the birds are said to 'glide' when they move and this highlights to the reader that they move smoothly and continuously meaning that nothing can stop them; this additionally makes the reader think that they are brave as they would still glide even in a battle field.
