2. Germany also was set up for the Reich Food Estate which allowed the production and distribution of crops to be regulated strictly. This meant government had control over food production as well as prices. 

3. Unemployment rates went from 6 million to almost nothing. The Nazi party passed a rule to reduce unemployment and it worked.

  • The increase in military forces resulted in an increase in the production of machinery which led to millions of unemployed to get a job.

The Labour Front (DAF)

This was a Nazi organisation that replaced trade unions, which were banned. It set wages and nearly always followed the wishes of employers, rather than employees.

Strength through Joy (KdF)

This scheme gave workers rewards for their work - evening classes, theatre trips, picnics, and even very cheap or free holidays. The purpose of the KdF was to support the Führer and thank him and to keep everyone happy after abolishing the trade unions.

One of its popular schemes was the Volkswagen - the people's car. The car can be paid by instalments, and the buyer would only receive the car after they had paid the balance in full. When World War Two started in 1939, the car factories had to turn their attention to manufacturing arms. As a result, many Germans lost their money.

Beauty of Labour

The job of this organisation was to help Germans see that work was good. It also encouraged factory owners to improve conditions for workers. The Beauty of Labour organisation improved conditions in some work places with improved canteens, toilets and sometimes even sports facilities.

However, the Nazis expected women to stay at home, look after the family and produce children in order to secure the future of the Aryan race.

Family & Marriage
Hitler wanted a high birth rate so that the Aryan population would grow. He tried to achieve this by:
  • introducing the Law for the Encouragement of Marriage in 1933 which gave newlywed couples a loan of 1,000 marks, and allowed them to keep 250 marks for each child they had
  • giving an award called the Mother’s Cross to women who had large numbers of children. Women who had 5 children were given a bronze medal. A mother of 6 or 7 children earned a silver medal. A gold medal was awarded to women who gave birth to 8 or more children

Employment
Measures were introduced which strongly discouraged women from working, including:
  • the introduction of the Law for the Reduction of Unemployment, which gave women financial incentives to stay at home
  • not conscripting  women to help in the war effort until 1943

  • Taking away from Jews all civil and political rights

1938
Jews could not be doctors.
  • Jews had to add the name Israel (men) or Sara (women) to their name.
  • Jewish children were forbidden to go to school.
  • Kristallnacht - 9 November
  • The SS organised attacks on Jewish homes, businesses and synagogues in retaliation for the assassination of the German ambassador to France by a Jew.

1939
  • Jews were forbidden to own a business, or even a radio. 
  • By the outbreak of World War Two in September 1939, the Jews were stateless, their employment options in Germany were severely restricted and they feared for their safety.

Policy of Persecution

Sterilisation
  •  In order to keep the Aryan race pure, many groups were prevented from reproducing. The mentally and physically disabled, including the deaf, were sterilised, as were people with hereditary diseases. 
  • Children born to German women and French African soldiers in the Rhineland at the end of World War One were called 'Rhineland Bastards' and also sterilised.

Concentration Camps
  • Homosexuals, prostitutes, Jehovah's Witnesses, gypsies, alcoholics, beggars, hooligans and criminals were often rounded up and sent away to camps. During World War Two, 85 per cent of Germany's gypsies died in these camps.

  • He merged the Nazi and the Nationalist Parties.
  • The Centre Party (Catholic Party) disbanded voluntarily in return for Hitler agreeing not to interfere in Catholic schools and youth movements. 
  • Socialists and communists, who had not already fled, were put in prison.
  • In March, local parliaments were closed and then re-established with Nazi majorities.
  • In April, Nazis took over key posts in local governments. Jews and other political enemies were removed from the civil service. 
  • In July 1933, other political parties were banned. The Law Against the Formation of New Parties meant only the Nazi Party was allowed to exist. Therefore, when the Reichstag and local governments met, which was infrequently, all the deputies were Nazis.
  • In January 1934, the Law for the Reconstruction of the State abolished Germany’s state governments, apart from Prussia.
These changes made Germany a one-party state and destroyed democracy in the country.

When a new Reichstag election was held in December 1933, the Nazis won 92 per cent of the vote.

Three events that consolidated his power:
1st; Reichstag Fire-the incident where the parliament was set on fire and he blamed a Dutch communist. Hence, the power of communism in Germany is greater reduced so Nazi has greater chance of gaining power.
2nd; Enabling Act-in order for hitler to pass laws without the parliament and president’s agreement he established this act. This law was a led to pass because he banned the other parties and threatened politicians to pass.

1. The Reichstag fire -
Hitler accused a Dutch Communist for treason and arson for starting the Reichstag fire for intentions to overthrow the government. Next, he convinced President Hindenburg to declare a state of emergency for the country from communist insurgency. Hence, civil rights such as freedom of speech, the press, and dissolution of the trade unions, were suspended. Launching a movement to inspect peoples houses, 4000 pro-communist leaders were then arrested and the pro-communist party was banned. Thus, the people lost their trust in the capability of Communist party. This allowed Hitler to clear his path towards his rise of power by getting rid of all the obstacles and political rivals such as the communist party, so that he can win more votes of the people during the upcoming elections.
2. Enabling Act - March 1933
In order to pass the Enabling Act, he first had to form alliances with moderate and small parties to gain their loyalty from them. Next, he used his SA men to pressure the other political rivals using their rowdiness to pass the Enabling Act, winning at least 2/3 of the parliament votes. This thus increased Hitler’s political authority to create and pass laws without the consent of the parliament and president, which made him a dictator of the nation, ending the democracy in Germany.
3. The Night of the Long Knives - June 1934
Hitler ordered his SS army to execute all of his political enemies who angered him and Ernst Roehm, the leader of the SA army and his men. Hitler felt that they were growing stronger and had hidden agendas to consolidate power. Thus, the power of the SA was broken and became subjected to the control of the SS army, killing the lives of 400 men. The purge thus inculcated loyalty in the SS men towards Hitler, as they entrusted to hold greater power in Germany. Hitler and his Nazi party went to set fire to the parliament building called the Reichstag building. He accused a Dutch communist of being the arsonist and the communist got arrested. People then thought that the communists were conspiring against the government and the government went to eliminate the communists who were a political threat to Hitler.

The second event was the Enabling Act which allowed Hitler to create and pass laws without involvement of the government. This allowed him to gain more political power and control over the citizens and the country. He used his power to make his Nazi party to be the only legal party in the government so there was no opposition or threats in the parliament for them.

The third event was the Night Of The Long Knives when he used the SS guards to purge his political leaders from the paramilitary organization known as the SA. No. I believe that the method Hitler use was too harsh. People suffer under Hitler’s rules. People were live in fear under hi rules.
