         <description><![CDATA[<div>This philosophy of learning and teaching supports an inclusive approach because right from the start, every student, no matter what level they are on or what skills they have, is able to participate when a thought provoking question or hook is presented in the form of "food for thought".&nbsp; When a clip or experiment is presented without prior teaching it leads to many wonderful actions by the student. The most important of which is that sense of wonder because it gets the brain engaged so that it begins thinking, processing, formulating, hypothesizing.</div><div><br></div><div>Some of the benefits are that a child's sense of wonder and curiosity are developed.&nbsp; Also interest is sparked where a boring lecture may do the complete opposite.&nbsp; In addition, new knowledge is being gained as to how the world works.&nbsp;<br><br>Some drawbacks are that it takes funds to be able to purchase the realia and items needed for the "hook".&nbsp; Another issue is having time to do these fun thought provoking activities and more so because if something usually gets skipped it's reading, writing and math, but these fun activities that do so much to inspire a love for learning.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Building curiosity is the most important mandate that a teacher has, because curiosity itself is what motivates humans to continue to learn.&nbsp; It motivates students (humans) to ask questions, which propels our drive to build knowledge and to seek truth.&nbsp; Curiosity includes all students and can be used to bind us into a common goal.&nbsp; The reflective piece can additionally be used in all aspects throughout life, whether it be academics or relationships.&nbsp; Curiosity and reflection are fundamental to what it means to be human, however it is something that often loses value as we age.&nbsp; Instilling these values in our students is the ultimate manifestation of what it means to be inclusive as these traits are not based on previously acquired knowledge. &nbsp;<br><br>There are challenges, however.&nbsp; State mandated curriculum, mandatory testing, and home life are all barriers to creating a class culture that promotes curiosity and reflection.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>How does the philosophy of SPARK learning match with an Inclusive Mindset? Benefits? Challenges?<br><br>Student questions are the seeds of real learning.&nbsp; Of REAL learning.&nbsp; Having the confidence in the process of learning -- in the messy and trial/error process that involves reflection and multiple attempts...that confidence can <br><br>Curiosity comes first.<br>Embrace the mess. <br>Practice reflection...and allow for revision.<br><br>HOW CAN WE GROW OUR STUDENTS' CURIOSITY?<br><br>Dropping out of school...out of life...can happen in many forms.&nbsp; When a learner doesn't interact, engage, or participate - even when they physically show up -- that is dropping out.&nbsp; When we allow someone to not contribute and the group leader lets learners stay disengaged, it harms the overall community of the group, not to mention that individuals' experience and growth.&nbsp; When educators don't meet learners where they are at, when we devalue the existing knowledge and experiences they have - we may contribute to a student "checking out"...or worse, dropping out....engaging students by <em>tapping into</em> their <em>natural sense of curiosity</em> allows them to feel <strong>valued</strong>, to be embraced by their learning community and to understand that their participation is <strong>needed</strong> so that the whole group can grow as fully as possible.&nbsp; The educator in the room is the one who has the greatest control over whether the learners check in...or check out.&nbsp; When we INCLUDE EVERYONE, we all win.<br><br>The benefits -- we are able to commune as a true community -- learning together, without ego and with a sense of interconnectedness, this is a basic human need.&nbsp; Studies show that those who have community live longer, healthier, and happier lives.&nbsp; This ideal situation comes from intentional planning, partnering, and providing space and encouragement for all members to bring to the table their gifts...and allows each member to grow from one another.<br><br>The challenges -- you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.  Setting up the right circumstances for engagement is vital, but even moreso -- learners who accept their responsibility to the group.  By respecting the community, by acknowledging that their participation is needed and wanted, and by contributing by communicating, engaging, and connecting with the other learners -- it grows the group -- BUT -- each individual has the power to choose to connect and contribute and grow.  The greatest challenge is that the learner, the participant ultimately holds the power to make or break the community experience...each learner plays a valuable part.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>How does this philosophy of learning and<br>teaching support an inclusive approach?<br><br>The ideas/concepts of<br>1. Curiosity comes first&nbsp;<br>2. Embrace the mess&nbsp;<br>3. Practice reflection&nbsp;<br>are universal and applicable to all students. These concepts are very aligned with IB Philosophy and don't place value on a single success, but show the stops on the road to growth. I made a connection with how I approach my cooking. I love to cook and try out a new meal. I am not a fancy chef, I am not professionally trained, but I find a recipe that sounds interesting to me, make an absolute mess in the kitchen and then when it is sampled by my family at the dinner table, embrace the feedback and reflect on how I can improve or if it was just an epic failure and start with a new recipe next time. :) It's ok for students to fail sometimes and reflect and grow - but understanding the process is going to help them along their paths.&nbsp;<br><br>What are the benefits? Challenges?<br>Benefit - any teacher in any discipline, any student, any human for that matter, can embrace the three universal concepts of&nbsp;<br>1. Curiosity comes first&nbsp;<br>2. Embrace the mess&nbsp;<br>3. Practice reflection.&nbsp;<br>Challenges are when students are not in the mindset to see growth. If a student does not feel supported, they will not be able to apply these concepts. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>How does this philosophy of learning and teaching support an inclusive approach?<br>It is student-centered and allows for student questions hence their developing their own curiosity and finding answers. By opening learning to questions, learning becomes student-led and this approach also forces teachers to allow for different approaches and content to be explored, because interest lays in different areas. Classroom learning can only be facilitated then when students have the knowledge of tools to answer their own questions.<br><br>What are the benefits? Challenges?<br>A benefit is definitely the engagement in learning when it is intrinsic. As a teacher, it can be hard to monitor and help students when they are not ready to be that independent or a class with diverse interests. So a certain grade of independence and a tool kit has to be established prior.<br>Outside challenges are curriculum demands (state standards) and class size.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Children are naturally curious and a thought provoking question gets them started/interested. All students learn if they are interested. They are looking for answers and it sparks more questions. It becomes student-led and hopefully leads to more and more learning. Reflecting afterwards is something students should not only do for school/project, it is something we all should do to not make the same mistake again/make it better.<br><br></div><div>I think this is a very inclusive approach to learning as every child is curious and can participate at some level. A potential problem I see is that they come to false conclusions, go off in a direction we don't want them to go or get frustrated because they cannot find an answer. We also don't have endless time to let the student explore because we have to cover the state standards.&nbsp;<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>How does this philosophy of learning and<br>teaching support an inclusive approach?<br>- His three rules of "curiosity comes first, embrace the mess, practice reflection" are all three valuable for the teacher and the learner. Inquiry supports inclusion because every student is encouraged to think and be curious. Every student is heard and there are different ways the inquiry can go.&nbsp;<br>What are the benefits?&nbsp;<br>- Benefits to this approach are that since students come up with their own questions they are invested in what is "their" learning more so than "prescribed" learning. The learning is now relevant and personalized.<br>What are challenges?<br>- Challenges are that students might not be able to independently investigate or use resources. They need to be prepared to investigate independently.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>How does this philosophy of learning and<br>teaching support an inclusive approach?<br><br>Students are curious by nature and so this is the starting point.&nbsp; From there we can build on their interest and inquiries to parlay into the learning.<br>I feel like this way of approaching learning is very conneted to IB and it focuses more on growth and learning vs a set determination of understanding. I really like the idea of feedback and feed forward. This is differentiated and atainable to the student population. &nbsp; All students can show their learning in a way that best represents them. <br><br>What are the benefits? Challenges?<br>The benefits outweigh the challenges. I think as teachers become more comfortable in their own practices they are able to allow for more student agency. &nbsp; Student agency also creates buy in from the students.<br>Some challenges include learning to let go and embracing the chaos (this is still hard for me).   Another drawback could be budget and or time.  Scope and sequences tend to want to cover everything and there just isn't enough time in the day / year to get it all done. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>How does this philosophy of learning and teaching support an inclusive approach?&nbsp;<br><br>This philosophy encourages curiosity and experimentation. These are entry points that all students can have access to. Anyone can ask questions and want to know more. It's also based on experiences and real questions the students have.&nbsp;<br><br>What are the benefits?&nbsp;<br><br>Engagement! Curiosity! Learning can be fun and messy and sometimes you fail, sometimes you learn more from so-called failures. I like the reflective part as well. Be willing to be honest and authentic. The teacher is expected to learn from the students and work with their questions and curiosity.<br><br><br>Challenges?<br><br>The challenge is to be brave enough as a teacher to do things this way. It's safer to just follow the prescribed curriculum or be rigid in planning. Teachers tend to focus on checking off the boxes and teaching standards, but this might be where we lose our students, because we aren't being responsive and aren't tailoring our teaching to their needs.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This philosophy of learning, this inquiry, is one of the key elements of IB and is, when done well, a pathway to inclusion. If children are guided with curiosity, allowed to mess up and try and try again, and are given time to reflect throughout the process, all can contribute in the learning process and make growth. &nbsp;<br><br>Benefits:&nbsp; Student agency, engagement, and the opportunity for depth vs breadth of truly exploring and understanding a<br>concepts are benefits.&nbsp; Students can learn with and from each other and have the flexibility to change the path of their learning. Concepts may be remembered rather than facts memorized.&nbsp;<br><br>Challenges: Like with all great teaching, time is always a challenge when given a standards based curriculum, so how can we look passed the standards alone to implement a concept driven curriculum?</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>How does this philosophy of learning and teaching support an inclusive approach?<br>The approach allows for students to be the center of the learning and to explore their own curiosities, not just the curriculum that is set for them. This philosophy allows for variation and student choice from unit to unit and gives students the chance to grow as individual learners.<br><br>What are the benefits?<br>The benefits of this approach is more student by-in since students feel empowered through their own learning and also are able to explore their curiosities. Instead of students struggling to get through lectures and hands-off lessons, they can be a part of their own learning and the experiences they create in the classroom.&nbsp;<br><br>Challenges?<br>Challenges that can come from this approach is students who may struggle to take responsibility for their own learning. Another challenge is as a teacher creating and building the curriculum that is centered around curiosity due to mandates set by the state. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>How does this philosophy of learning and teaching support an inclusive approach?&nbsp;<br><br>As simple as it seems, curiosity is an attribute that still needs to be nurtured, celebrated, and sometimes even taught.&nbsp; Students need opportunities to think deeply and take action as they're led by their own curiosity.&nbsp; What a great way to have a heightened engagement and intentional learning!<br><br>What are the benefits? Challenges?<br><br>The benefit of teaching with an inclusive philosophy is that it allows students to guide the needed differentiation among the various learning needs within the classroom. This philosophy fosters student-led learning.<br><br>A challenge that requires a balance with planning and being flexible is managing various activities simultaneously.  An additional challenge is balancing direct instruction that is necessary with exploratory learning.</div>]]></description>
