Machine guns and rapid-firing artillery, when used in combination with trenches and barbed-wire emplacements, gave a decided advantage to the defense, since these weapons’ rapid and sustained firepower could decimate a frontal assault by either infantry or cavalry.

The machine gun has been one of the major weapons in wars starting with World War I. During World War I (1914-1918)the machine guns that were used had to be operated and controlled by 3-6 people to fire. When the Vietnam War came to action during 1955-1975 the machine gun was able to operate by one person. One of the most frequently used guns during the Vietnam War was the M-60 which was a gas powered machine gun which could shoot up to 550 bullets to the distance of 2,000 yards.
