However, acting with courage and heroism doesn't always mean sticking up for others, it can be as simple as sticking up for yourself when no one else is there for you. Acting with heroism/courage doesn't mean saving the world like in the movies but it can be rather small things that you do for others without expecting anything in return. Some keywords that come to mind when the question "what does it mean to act with courage?" is presented include heroism, courage, bravery, and kindhearted.

At this time, society was extremely biased towards non colored individuals. Atticus being very well educated clearly knows. However, decides to defend Tom Robinson. He dives into this court case also knowing that he would not get paid but rather he would be doing this as a honorable act. When his daughter, Scout, questions why he is defending a colored man, Atticus replies, "someone must stick up for others that can't stand up for themselves" (Lee). This relates back to the essential question because it shows how Atticus, despite gaining absolutely nothing from standing up for Tom, decides to do so regardless. One indirect example inside the text TKAM is how Jem is always standing up for himself. Jem often stands up for what he believes without feeling the need to back down or feel embarrassed. This conveys how acting with heroism and courage doesn't always have to be for others, but instead yourself.

Eren saves his friend with no hesitation despite knowing that he had very little to no chance of surviving. Somehow, he miraculously survives and comes into contact with Armin later on. Armins asks "why did you save me, what if you died" Eren replies, "I would do anything to save the people I care about. One of which being putting myself out there to make sure the rest of you are safe" (AOT S2). This relates back to the essential question because Eren, despite being in peril, puts his life on the line to save someone he cares deeply about. He does this in the face of knowing that he will not gain anything from this rather than saving one of his loved ones which he will probably not live another day to see. He does so even when severely injured and was almost guaranteed death. Another honorable mention inside the show AOT where two of the main characters show heroism and courage was when Magath and Keith stayed behind in order to allow the rest of their comrades to escape. By doing so, they lurked inside of the enemies crew ship which would've been used in order to stop their allies. Magath and Keith stay behind and lit up the ship with explosives. In the process of doing so, they both sacrifice their lives and end up dead. He was a kid that fought in underground rap battles and made it out of the shackles that restricted him from greatness. Lose Yourself is a song that shows you to stand up for yourself and show the world what you’re capable of. One stanza that is included in the song is “to seize everything you ever wanted” (Eminem). This stanza shows how acting with courage and heroism doesn't have to be sticking up for others particularly but instead, standing up for yourself. This relates back to my essential question because the song ultimately portrays how it can be both difficult and easy at the same time to be heroic/courageous and stand up for yourself. It could be easy for some to stand up for themselves because it gives them the feeling of power and accomplishment. However, it could be difficult for others because the fear of judgment, rejection, and negative assumptions hold them back. To sum it all up, the song Lose Yourself has a deeper meaning than others may perceive it as because it shows what it may mean to act with courage and heroism.
