Gloria Steinem - Susan Tran

Gloria Steinem is an example of a someone who is spreading the ideas of Enlightenment in 2020. She does this by sharing her thoughts on social media and taking action to make sure that everyone's rights are respected. She started out as a journalist in New York. During that time, men mostly had the best opportunities. When she suggested political stories, her editor told her, "I don't think of you that way." Even so, she perservered and eventually became a political writer for the New York Magazine. She used this to report the women's liberation movement as well as political campaigns. In 1972, she along with a few other feminists formed the National Women’s Political Caucus, which supports gender equality and ensures the election of more pro-equality women to public office. Other accomplishments include the Women’s Action Alliance organization in 1971 and the Women’s Media Center in 2004. These promote non-sexist, multi-racial children’s education and positive images of women in media. Today, she continues to use social media platforms to spread ideas about women's rights, equality, participation in government, and other topics. In 2013, the president at the time, Barak Obama presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor.

I may be biased because she's like the love of my life and my idol, but I truly believe that Billie is an example of someone who is spreading ideas of Enlightenment in 2020. She does this through her music and taking advantage of her large following on Instagram. For the past few months Billie has been actively speaking about our worldly problems. Encouraging her followers to educate themselves on the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as attending protests and posting on her platform. And lately she's been promoting voting, speaking about it before performances and freely on her Instagram story. She also breaks stigma taking about her body and mental illnesses, in her songs like "idontwannabeyouanymore" and "Listen Before I go" In writing "Not My Responsibility", a short film she directed and wrote, she tackles body shaming, self love, acceptance & misogyny. Saying, "If I wear what is comfortable, I am not a woman. If I shed the layers, I am a slut. Though you have never seen my body, you still judge it. And judge me for it. Why? We make assumptions about people based on their size. We decided who they are, we decide their worth. If I wear more or if I wear less, who decides what that makes me, what that means. Is my value only based on your perception? Or is your opinion of me not my responsibility." And even before the release of "Not My Responsibility", she breaks traditional gender stereotypes through her fashion alone. She spoke in an 2018 interview saying, "If I was a guy and I was wearing these baggy clothes, nobody would bat an eye. There's people out here saying, 'Dress like a girl for once! Wear tight clothes you'd be much prettier and your career would be so much better!' No it wouldn't. It literally would not," she said. And it's true, because 2 years later, same style with high fashion brands, she win 5 grammys in one night alone.

Greta Thunberg is a great example of someone who is spreading the ideas of enlightenment in 2020. Greta Thunberg is a 17 year old environmental activist who has gained a massive following because of her view that humanity is facing a global crisis. Because Greta is so young, she knows how to use social media and uses it to her advantage. She reaches out to the younger generations and tells them how to raise up and use their voice. In the video linked below, Greta Thunberg says, “We couldn’t care less about your party politics. From a sustainability perspective, the right, the left, and as well as the center have all failed.” To me this really shows how she is pushing everyone to put aside politics and focus on a major issue that is happening to all of us. She continues by saying, “No political ideology or economic structure has been able to tackle the climate and environmental emergency and create a cohesive and sustainable world, because that world, in case you haven’t noticed, is currently on fire.” Greta Thunsberg has been using her voice for the last few years and I don’t think people take her into much consideration. She is truly a great activist and I hate to see that the older people in our government are only hearing and not listening to what she is saying.

Mandy Moore, she is an American singer, songwriter, actress and voice actress. I've always looked up to her and enjoyed watching movies she starred in as well as listening to her music. I believe and have seen that she is spreading the ideas of Enlightenment in 2020. She uses her large platforms on both Instagram on Twitter to motivate and educate her followers on things such as The Black Lives matter movement, constantly she posts about the importance of protesting and fighting for the voices of POC, she stayed well aware and was angry by the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Elijah McCain she made individual posts about each victim explaining their murder in depth with true facts and with ways to get justice for these innocent souls. In a post about George Floyd she spoke out in the caption to her "white friends" and stated "We can't let our discomfort, ego, or belief that this work doesn't include us, prevent us from acknowledging our privilege and that we have the burden of dismantling white supremacy. We do. We cannot be complacent. We cannot be silent. We need to have this conversation with our families and friends and coworkers". Not only does she caption her posts she also puts links in her bios to petitions, herself speaking on these subjects, go fund mes', and links for more information on what it may be she knows needs or help. Currently, she is promoting and encouraging her audience to vote while also reposting posts on how it is you vote with step-by-step instructions. On twitter she really expresses her opinions and thoughts she tweets and replies to news on President Trump, LGBTQ+ rights, completing the census, the deadline for register in different states. Basically, all that is trending she has spoke out upon and continues to speak out no matter the judgement or hate she may receive.

Vivian Nguyen-Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton is a musician and business women whose career kicked off in 1967 with her debut album, Hello, I'm Dolly. Throughout her career, and even in the present, Dolly has proven herself to someone who speaks out against wrong-doings and fought for what she believed in. While her discography may be big, her heart is bigger.
Growing up in a poor household, Dolly understood the hardships that less privileged people faced. Inspired by her father's inability to read, Dolly founded Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. The library non-profit organization works to provide free books to children until they start school. According to imaginationlibrary.com, Dolly hopes to spark a love of reading within children by giving them a special book every month. In her 1991 song, Family, Dolly persuades the listener to accept anyone regardless of where they are in life. She suggests that preachers, gays, drunks, and strays should be accepted because they're family. While a lyric like this isn't controversial in the progressive society that we live in today, saying something like that back in the 90's was a bold move. However, her support for the LGBT+ community goes beyond a song lyric. In an interview with PrideSource, Dolly reveals the presence of LGBT+ individuals in her family and how she's helped them "feel good about themselves." Her theme park, Dollywood, also acts as a safe space for LGBT+ individuals. It employs members of the community in a place that isn't so accepting towards them. Even today Dolly advocates for minority groups. In a Billboard interview, Dolly adamantly supports the Black Lives Matter movement proclaiming, "And of course Black lives matter."
So, how does Dolly Parton promote enlightenment? She uses her platform to spread messages that she believes in and advocates for minority groups. Through her work, she promotes both intellectual growth and social growth. Dolly uses her experiences growing up to sympathize and understand those who are struggling, and uses her notoriety to help them.

He was a hero in the movies and a role model in real life. Chadwick Boseman was an actor who played a role as the Black Panther in the Avengers. Boseman was an inspiration to many since he did many things which was he fought for the right of many races. He was especially a role model form the black youth. He also was a great role model for his achievement and his actions. Boseman was an African American himself which meant he had to grow through racial injustice some points in his life and the hard ship. Even though he was going through hardship such as having stage 3 colon cancer it didn't stop him from smiling and doing things in his life. Which is the reason why I believe he had spread the ideas of Enlightenment during his time in 2020. Some reason why I believe this because his saying "wakanda forever" represent what people are proud of and what people aspire to. This phrase is being use threw out the world. Another reason why I believe this is because in his last days on this earth he fought for social justice and support the front liners and also made a speech about this which man people have heard even after his death. His death was very impactful to many due to his acts of heroism and his courage. Even after his death he was still considered a hero.

Through out her career, and even now, Kamala has fought against injustice. Growing up in Oakland, Kamala had a first hand view of the Civil Rights movement. Inspired by leaders such as Thurgood Marshall, Constance Baker Motley, and Charles Hamilton Houston, she decided that she was going to dedicate her life to helping those who could not defend themselves. She has done many great things though out her carrier, for example, she used her position as District Attorney of San Francisco to make a program that gives first-time drug offenders the chance to earn a high school diploma and find employment. During her time as Attorney General of San Francisco, she won a $25-billion settlement for California homeowners hit by the foreclosure crisis, defended California’s landmark climate change law, protected the Affordable Care Act, helped win marriage equality for all Californians, as well as prosecuted transnational gangs that trafficked in guns, drugs, and human beings. She has used her rather large social media platforms, such as twitter to raise awareness on issues such as woman's healthcare, stating that "Every woman deserves safe, affordable access to comprehensive reproductive health care...", as well as equal pay for women and the black lives matter movement.

Lin Manuel Miranda is more then what he was more then just the writer producer, along with a list of other things, and the lead in Hamilton. He also wrote and created In the heights and another (less popular) 21 chump street. Just by these musicals, Lin Manuel Miranda had change, broke and made history by not throwing way his shot (pun not attended) The least popular onw, 21 Chump Street, showed and identify and explain why drugs, love, and the wrong influence can be all but wrong. This short musical is something all kids can relate and is a good listen and reminder about love and drugs. The second one, In the Heights, was a musical talking about the Mexican community and the bond with community friends, and that amazing atmosphere. And how that saved their street. That musical won 5 awards, and the book is amazing. The movie is coming out soon, it was suppose to come out this summer, but then Corona, and kinda sad, it got proponed. However, he wasn't the lead, which is another reason he wrote Hamilton. Hamilton broke and rewrote History. Lin got the idea of this musical by picking up a book from a shelf and just got inspire. Which is incredible, not a lot of people know that. Hamilton broke so many walls. Lin took a gamble on having his whole entire cast not white, minus King George. Which never before you saw an African American played George Washington or Thomas Jefferson. And have Lafayette rapping. This musical broke the wall of racism in Broadway. He donated 6,000 dollars to the BLM movement. Also his work of composing, can be hear in Star Wars, and singing in Marry Poppins returns, Moana, and in the show DuckTales. The amazing part is that his musical is now on Disney+.

BTS, also known as Bangtan Boys, is a seven-member South Korean boy band that have spread their influence by utilizing their platform and connecting people globally through their music. BTS dives deeper into their music by addressing issues like the pressures of school and expectations of parents and society, something almost all kids and teenagers struggle with. In addition, BTS spoke at the United Nations General Assembly, where RM, their leader, spoke, "No matter who you are, where you're from, your skin color, gender identity: speak yourself." Through their music, BTS have been able to spread self acceptance, leading them to partner with UNICEF on the "Love Myself" anti-violence campaign that launched in November 2017. By November 2018, the group raised about $1.4 million for UNICEF. Along with that, they've recently donated $1 million to Black Lives Matter, influencing ARMY, BTS’s fandom, to raise another $1 million for the cause. On top of that, BTS broke down barriers and opened new opportunities for other artists in the music industry, through their notable achievements. Overall, BTS has impacted the world and “enlightened” others by giving strength to those who are struggling and emphasized the importance of self-love.

An example of an Enlightenment Thinker today is Emmanuel Acho as he talks about and promotes ideas such as freedom, equality, and social justice. Emmanuel Acho was a former linebacker for the NFL and is now a sports news analysis for Fox Sports. With the Black Lives Matter movement gaining more attraction this year, Mr. Acho has started a series called Uncomfortable Conversations With a Black Man. With many non-black people trying to grapple with concepts such as racism, privilege, and inequality, he has started an open dialogue between himself as a black man living in America and people who want to learn more about social justice and racism, or people who would like to share their experiences. Some guests that have joined in on the conversation include actor Matthew McConaughey and former Bachelorette star Rachel Lindsay. People can watch these episodes on Youtube, Instagram, and the "Uncomfortable Convos" website. Uncomfortable Conversations With a Black Man is also becoming a book with the help of Oprah. This shows that the ideas of the Enlightenment are still being promoted in our world today as people like Emmanuel Acho are working to bring change by challenging existing ideas (societal norms or prejudices) to better society by promoting growth and spreading awareness.

She was an advocator for many causes and movements including women’s rights, civil rights, gender equality, the LGBTQ community, and many more injustices. Her platform was her seat on the Supreme Court which allowed her to have a voice and be an activist in which she fought for what she knew was right. She initially wrote the Supreme Court"s Landmark decision in United States v. Virginia. This withheld that Virginia’s military institute could not refuse to admit any women whatsoever. This along with many other contributions were fought by this leader. She has set an example for the rest of us to fight for what we believe is right. Not only today and tomorrow, but forever.

In any opportunity that IU sees she tries her best to take the initiative to be an advocate for what she believes in and encourages her fans and those around her. Such as for when she took a role as a character in a korean drama, My Ahjussi (나의 아저씨), containing a hearing impaired character she donated to the Korea Association of the Deaf once she exposed herself to the difficulty for those with disabilities and recognized this immediately educating herself and sharing with others the significance.

Matt Damon is an American actor, producer, and screenwriter. He is knowns as an Academy Award-winning screenwriter. He is an active volunteer because he has been helping with Ethiopia’s water crisis. He has made the lack of clean water in Ethiopia a cause for his charity. It’s not just Ethiopia, but there are 13 different countries that he is trying to help. Matt and his helper Gary White are the co-founders of Water.org and WaterEquity where people can donate money for those people who need clean water to drink. They became together to lunch Water.org in 2009 to work to solve this crisis of water. Their goal is to fun $ 50 million. Gary says,” We take those funds and invest in enterprises that serve the poor in terms of their water and sanitation needs.” Damon says, “The municipality is piping water underneath their feet, they are just not connected to it... So if you could front them the money for a connection to the system that exists, you are buying their time back. They can work at a job they will get all those hours back that they are waiting in line or all that income back that they are wasting that the middle class wouldn’t have to pay comes back into that household. And so it was this idea he had to apply the concepts of microfinance to the water space and it just was a brilliant idea. These loans payback between 97 and 99 percent.” He tries to show the importance of helping those who need help. He wants young people and adults to know how much people are suffering from different types of crises. Just because we are in a better country where we have a better life than them doesn’t mean that we should forget them. He wants people to know that there are other people in this world that need our help and who need help from us. 2.1 billion people lack access to safe, readily available water at home. Of those 844 million people lack access to basic drinking water service. He is a leader and an example for us that we need to start to help those people who are suffering.
Donate to this Website:

Kendrick Sampson - Angelina Shaw

Kendrick Sampson is an American Actor and Activist. He uses his platform on social media to liberate those in his community. He is the cofounder of BLD PWR, which is an "organization that provides training for artists, actors and other creatives to use their voices to promote social change. He is seeking to dismantle racism in the entertainment industry. One quote that I like by him is, "At the end of my life, I want to be able to say that I did all I could to leave this world better than I found it. That is the end goal.” He has no website. But, you can find him on instagram @kendrick38 as well as on twitter @kendrick38. The final place you can find him is on Snapchat at ksmith38. He promotes the ideas of Enlightenment by showing that their is police brutality and by saying things such as, "Defund. Abolish. Repair. Heal." He also tweeted, "American Legal System-including law enforcement, the government etc - was founded as and continues to operate as a big-ass(this is me Angelina Shaw sorry about that word), systemic hate crime against the most vulnerable Black and Indigenous - the only good that has come out of it is when liberators fought against and forced it." Another tweet I liked was one where he said, "STOP TRYING TO SHAME OPPRESSED PEOPLE INTO VOTING. Stop leaning into failed strategies, rhetoric and tactics. Stop centering everything around flipping GOP/Trump voters aka compromising with white supremacy. Inspire us. Fight with us. Show us you care - in action and policy." One of the final pieces of evidence I found was when he reposted on his instagram what Melina Abdullah posted which said, "#ChristopherColumbus was a thief, a rapist, a sex trafficker, a pedophile, a colonizer, a murderer, and a crazed genocidal maniac...not to mention an idiot." The final piece of evidence that I chose was from another tweet he wrote that says, "I'm done with Police. I've been doing with police. Throw the whole damn system away. ABOLISH the police system. As prisons continue legal slavery - Police continue legal slave catching. We want justice? ABOLISH the SYSTEM. Build a new one that actually cares about us. #SeanReed

https://www.instagram.com/p/CCzwKdhBbDU/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

https://www.instagram.com/p/CGQZVqxBW2p/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

https://www.instagram.com/p/B_3mbPDhyYk/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

https://www.instagram.com/p/B_5YW0bh-YC/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

https://www.instagram.com/p/B0CTXL7HIqy/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

Bernie Sanders has been a politician who has been fighting for social justice using logic, reasoning, and science. He is a US senator who has fought for the freedom of immigrants, equality for the BIPOC community, and a fighter against global warming and corporations. Bernie is called a radical by many because of his progressive beliefs, although many of his beliefs are basic human rights that should already exist in America. Bernie uses Twitter and other social media platforms to reach many people he mostly appeals to the youth. The number one reform he has been fighting in recent years is to get rid of all college debt for the youth, and I agree with him. Bernie has also been fighting for racial injustices that the BIPOC community faces since he was young.
