Our student centered challenge is to check for continuous understanding. To do this, it must be in real-time using assessments to measure student learning. Best practice would be to check understanding multiple times throughout the unit. We want to see if there is anything we can cut out, build upon, or further challenge our students on. This can also help us identify common misconceptions, or areas of strength. This type of checking for understanding will allow us and the students to know if the skill or content was mastered.

7.RV.3.2 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a nonfiction text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone.

Academic vocabulary ties into several of the ELA standards that were “borderline” for our school last year. The 7th grade S.S. dept. has chosen this as our focus for our student-centered challenge to improve.

Over the next couple weeks, we will be meeting with our English dept. And brainstorming ideas to improve student performance in these areas in a fun, meaningful and effective way.
