         <title>A Turbulent Time </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>1625: Charles I becomes king of England, Scotland and Ireland. tensions rise between monarchy and parliament over power and religion</p><p>1642-1651: conflict between Royalist (cavaliers) and parliamentarians (roundheads). it led to the trial and execution of Charles the 1st(1649). then the rise of Oliver Cromwell and the commonwealth of England come about.</p><p>1649- 1660: England becomes a republic (briefly). Cromwell becomes Lord Protector (1653). ﻿﻿Strict Puritan rule and suppression in Ireland and Scotland.</p><p>1660: Charles II restored to the throne and the ﻿﻿return of monarchy but tensions over religion and succession remain.</p><p>1685: His open Catholicism causes fear of Catholic dominance.</p><p>1688: James II is overthrown in a bloodless coup. William III and Mary II ﻿﻿take the throne and establishes a constitutional monarchy with the Bill of Rights (1689).</p><p>1701-1714: England (later Britain) involved in European conflict to prevent unification of French and Spanish crowns.</p><p>1707: England and Scotland formally unite as Great Britain.</p><p>1715 &amp; 1745: Jacobites rebellions attempts to restore the Stuart monarchy, especially Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745 but ultimately fail.</p><p>1760s-1770s: The Industrial Revolution begins and Major changes in manufacturing, transport, and society begin in Britain.</p><p>1775-1783: The American Revolutionary War in Britain made American colonies fight for and win their independence.</p><p>1789: Then the French Revolution begins inspiring fear and debate in Britain but it influenced political and social reform movements.</p><p>1791: Advocates for democratic reform and individual rights.</p><p>1798: United Irishmen rise against British rule, inspired by the American and French revolutions, marking a key moment in Irish revolutionary history.</p>]]></description>
