This started in the US with The Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, the UK started the de-regulation of airlines in the mid-1980s and was completed in 1997.

How the de-regulation of airlines affected British passenger airlines is by lowering the fares for passengers especially on routes like the UK-Ireland link, private ownership and to operate more commercial airlines. However there was increased congestion at airports and in the air and there has been a decline of regional airlines.
