 I DO take time personally for play. Board games with my 4 girlfriends once a month, Canasta (a card game) with 7 others once a month, and Cribbage with my husband's 86 year old aunt and uncle once a month.   Plus I am fortunate that our 4 year old granddaughter likes to play games with me when she comes to visit. So play is not a problem for me personally. Taking the time to see what makes them leaders in learning will better help inform my own understanding of what it takes to be the best teacher I can be. Classroom management difficulties can have underlying causes in ‘gaps’ such as Skill, Knowledge, Capacity, Will, Cultural Competence, and Emotional Intelligence. I have always been a learner and I like to learn. I take classes so I can make myself a better teacher. Recently, I have been studying growth mindset and have been using this in my classroom. As I teach more years, I have learned to be more organized. I love the Manage Your Energy organization on Page 238 and I tried it this weekend. It really has worked. We need to give them time to be kids, because that is what they are!

Even high school students can have the opportunity to act like kids sometimes. Turning different activities into a game where they can move around is so helpful for their learning. I think we also need to realize that teachers need to be able to wind down from their daily tasks and have a little fun at work too. We have so much on our plates already, we might as well have fun with it! Not only will this help the attitudes of those around us but also ourselves. Having fun and laughing for even a short period of time can change someones day. Whether it be coloring a picture, taking a moment to take a few deep breaths, or playing with my son, play is very important.
