What is the issue?

The issue is unaffordable housing in Canada. As the population of Canada continues to grow, so does the demand for housing. The supply of houses has not kept up with the growth of the population. As a result of this, there has been an increase in pricing of these houses to try and slow down the demand. Many young citizens will not be able ever to own a house. There are also stricter rules around mortgage lending made by the Federal Government. The average salary in Toronto is around $60,000, which is not enough to own a home, and is just enough for a basic life.

Why is it important/significant?...Who does it impact?

This is important as it impacts the future of both young Canadian citizens and future immigrants coming into Canada. The rise in housing costs makes it harder for Canadians to buy homes forcing them to find other ways to live. The housing crisis also impacts rent costs which affects everyone who can’t afford to own their own homes. While managing homeless shelters across Toronto, Mark Aston found hundreds of university students who couldn’t afford to live in a home come through his doors. 26% of the residents in the shelter were students, half of them being in university and college. If housing costs continue to grow we can see more and more people leaving the country due to them not being able to afford a house. A house is somewhere where you feel comfortable, start a family and a place you feel safe. Not giving this experience to the next generation can destroy their hopes and dreams in this country.

There is no exact start date of the housing crisis, however there was a big increase in the housing prices in 2015 when the Liberal Party of Canada was elected and Justin Trudeau became the Prime Minister. Over the last decade, the cost of housing has slowly increased. The average cost of a house in Toronto was around 230 000 dollars in 1999 compared to the average price now which is just over 1 million dollars. This is around a 900 000 dollar increase in only 24 years. Justin Trudeau said himself that he did not move fast enough to make housing affordable before the crisis got very bad. While the Liberal Government is making some progress on the issue, the housing crisis has gotten so bad that some people will never be able to own a home, despite the progress.

The Conservative Party of Canada has a plan to stop the housing crisis. With the upcoming election in 2025, Pierre Polivere and the Conservative Party have come up with a plan to help bring down the cost of homes. His plan is to accelerate the building of new homes. Pierre Poilivviere has stated that Justin Trudeau has failed to do this. He is aiming to: 1) Require cities to build 15% more houses

2) Giving bonuses to cities that exceed this.

3) To require transit stations to have dense apartment buildings around it.

4) Sell off some of the federal owned land for more room to build houses.

If they win the next election, The Conservative Party of Canada has a plan to help Canadains.
