The OptiScan 5000, a product of OptiScan Biomedical Corporation, is the first FDA-approved continuous glucose monitoring system. The system, which was first prototyped in 2014, automatically pulls samples of blood from the patient's existing central venous catheter every 15 minutes to accurately measure the patient's blood glucose level using mid-infrared spectroscopy.
http://optiscancorp.com/technology-products/optiscanner-5000/

PROS vs. CONS

Pros:

Samples analyzed every 15 minutes.

Allows trending to see how patient's blood sugar has been over a period of time. This tending helps the clinician to provide early intervention in response to data.

Removes the requirement of the patient having to be stuck using lancets.

More time efficient for nursing staff as samples are automatically drawn.

While the device does not directly improve the patient's glycemic control, it does help to increase the knowledge of what the patient's blood glucose level is so that interventions can be done in response to the result. This leads to better glycemic control which has been shown to decrease a patient's overall length of stay by 3 to 4 days.

Cons:

Product can be expensive and requires the purchasing of spectrometry cartridge which must be changed out every 72 hours.

Requires some type of central venous access, which often is less and less available in an evolving healthcare world on infection prevention in the intensive care setting.

Although the product comes with two IV poles, the device is rather large and cumbersome taking up valuable real estate space at the patient's bedside.

I really think this is a great new innovation. While it is expensive, evidence has shown it to help improve patient's glycemic management which leads to better patient outcomes. When a patient has better glycemic control, the body is able to heal without that unnecessary stress. I would recommend this product for use in Intensive Care Units.

Team members to be included in product evaluation:

Natalie (Futuristic) - Natalie's futuristic strength will be useful on our team as she will help to provide vision to the future and understand the need for advancements in technology from the current practice.

Kelly (Analytical) - Kelly will be a valuable member of the team in that she will help us understand the reasons why we need this product. On the other hand, using Kelly's analytical strength, she can be the "devil's advocate, if you will, to give us the "what if" scenarios to help us alternate possibilities.

Robert (Consistency) - Using Robert's consistency strength will be crucial in helping to build a standardized practice on our unit. Also, of note, as Robert is in the MSN Education tract, he can help develop a consistent, standardized way to educate staff on the unit about the new product.

Amanda (Deliberative) - Amanda's deliberative strength will be crucial as we can trust that she will fully investigate all aspects of the product and how it would be potentially purchased and implemented on our unit.

Emily (Activator) - The activator role will be a great addition to our evaluation team. Emily will help to provide drive and focus to our discussions. Once we have made a decision to purchase the product, Emily will help lead the charge in determining the next steps in getting the product on our unit.
