Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.

Define ~ "Being able to understand what the idea is and critically think about narrowing the problem down to form a better solution" - An example of this is when you are given an assignment, and you have to unpack and define what the problem is in order to give a correct/valued answer. In business/design thinking, defining a problem can make the solution a lot better than something very broad. As Kidlin's law states, "If you write the problem down clearly, then the matter is half solved."

Ideate ~ "The creative process of forming an idea, concept, or solution" - An example of ideating solutions is when you go to the supermarket and they have sold out on your favorite cookies. You ideate a solution and find something different to buy. In business/design thinking, getting all ideas onto a piece of paper, even the crazy ones can clear your head and make space for better solutions. Ideas from an impossible solution can be carried over and modified to work properly.

Prototype ~ "Create an original and unique model of a solution that solves a problem" - For every realistic idea there should be the opportunity to make a prototype to further understand any flaws or improvements that have been overlooked. An example is a model of a car that needs to be prototyped to ensure that it suits the expectations. Prototyping in business/design thinking can drastically help improve a product and find any flaws.

Test ~ "Observe, analyse, and evaluate the outcome of different prototypes" - We test different things all the time, like what clothes we should wear, which way we should walk to school, and even which hand we write with, which we test out as children. Testing out the product can reveal any faults and bugs within it and remodelling or redesigning the product is important. Without it, it is possible to release an ineffective product.

Our teachers grouped us and assigned a technique for us to work on. We were given Rule of Three which is where you describe something using three adjectives. By doing this, we understand the use of these techniques and can easily put this into our Spin-Off Project later on.

Another way of persuading someone is by using emotion. Though it might sound strange, businesses may use different types of emotions to achieve the same effect on the audience. An example of this is Flex Tape and Ikea. Both use polar opposite emotions to persuade someone to buy their product. Flex Tape uses high energy, humor, and real-life uses of their product, targeting our humor side. The opposite however is for Ikea as they target
melancholy by making you feel sorry for a lamp that had been thrown out when all of a sudden the commercial stops, makes you reconsider what you are feeling bad about, snapping you out of that trance and putting your attention back onto the new lamp.

These two ways are both highly effective and can result in persuasion from different audiences. It is crucial for our Spin-Off project that we use a combination of these strategies to get our audience emotionally hooked, therefore lengthening their attention span and making them more interested into their product.

After this, the teachers gave us groups and for Wednesday we had to find a problem and create a solution. We concluded our problem to be littering and to find a solution, we used Divergent & Convergent thinking to solve this. We then settled on the idea of having some sort of robot clean it up. On Friday, we expanded our idea by using SCAMPER. SCAMPER is an acronym for different ways you can expand the product, these are the meanings.

SCAMPER

1. S = Substitute: To substitute one element for another. For example, replacing a material, process, or component with something else.

2. C = Combine: To combine different elements or ideas. For example, merging two or more elements to create something new.

3. A = Adapt: Adapting an existing idea or solution to fit your current problem or situation. For example, adapting it to better suit your environment or consumers.

4. M = Modify: Modifying various things about the idea or problem. For example, changing its shape, color, size, or other attributes.

5. P = Put to another use: Using a purpose of the idea and using it for another problem. For example, Can it be repurposed or used for something else?

6. E = Eliminate: Removing an unnecessary part of your idea to make the idea more simple and effective. For example, what can you eliminate to simplify the idea or solution?

7. R - Reverse/Rearrange: Reversing the purpose of the idea so that performs a different task. For example, flipping the idea or solution around to see it in a different perspective?

We started filming by walking around the school and collecting videos of rubbish and then we started filming our 'action shots'. On Wednesday, we filmed the interview and for the remainder of the lesson I edited the video.

• Where did our group do well in the Spinoff task?

  I feel we came up with a great original idea that can be used in the future, but there was a lot to improve on

• What improvements would we make if we had the opportunity to do the task again?

  With my video, I noticed that it was kind of boring and didn't involve any engagement with the audience. When I asked my peers what they thought of it, they all couldn't remember the advert, proving the advert was not memorable and easy to forget. This is a must that should be fixed when I start my Innovate as my product needs to stick with the judges in order to win the competition

  
  

• What Elements of Collaboration were successful?

  Due to one of our members being away, AG and I had to collaborate effectively to finish this task. We each took different parts such as script, evidence, filming, and editing which all needed great attention. I am pretty happy with the work we accomplished in that time frame with our situation.

• What improvements could have been made in terms of Collaboration?

  Even though we finished our tasks, we procrastinated a lot, making the quality of work not as good as we would usually present. This made us not go below the surface and dig deeper into the issue so even though I was happy that I finished it, I wasn't with the quality I handed up

• What Persuasive Techniques did we use? How effective were these? What evidence do I have of this?

  We used a range of techniques but the one that most predominantly stuck out was the testimonial/statistic technique. This was evident at the start of the advert (as seen at the top) and was the main persuasive driver in this story. The way this persuades the audience is by showing kids perspectives on rubbish and shows how much litter there really is.

After talking about different ways to paint an elephant, we then talked about different ways to shave a monkey. We came up with the idea of a back scratcher that shaves the monkeys while they scratch their back. Another idea that could be useful was to teach the monkey how to shave. Monkeys are smart animals, and they would be able to do it by themselves, but having a protective guard is very important as they are not too smart.

So my solution to Kalan's problem was to allocate the lockers based on height, rather than having them randomly assorted (as it is now). I then created a pitch

Creating a pitch is good practice for our Spin off project and Innov8 which will be summative. If I were to improve anything with my slides and presentation, it would be to make it more engaging and interactive, rather than boring and very information based.

We then thought of reasons why this was happening to try and find some solutions to these problems

Where is it a problem?

• We noticed that these problems were coming from developing countries such as China, Vietnam, and India.

Who does it affect?

• It affects people of low economic status and forces them to take manual labor jobs that pay below minimum wage

Why is it happening? (Think of all the causes and associated problems)

• Unfair labor laws as well as underprivileged families

Now that we understand the reasons behind these problems we can find some solutions that solve these problems, remembering that we could make them as imaginative as possible because we were using the Divergent and Convergent thinking method. I came up with a bank that gives out loans to people in need while giving very little interest so that these people do not live in debt. The aim of this bank is for people with a low credit score can use it so that they can get back onto their feet and not have to suffer from poverty, hunger, and homelessness.

We then moved on to an activity based on our previous brainstorming faze where we wrote our problems onto a Post-it note and wrote a product to solve them. We then swapped it for someone on our table and wrote a potential problem for that. We then swapped back and solved those problems, creating an in-depth mock idea about a product.

After this, we then plotted our ideas onto a HOW?, NOW., WOW! matrix to see if our problem was innovative. As seen in the picture, there were a whole bunch of ideas scattered everywhere but the main goal was to tweak your idea so that it became a WOW!

My idea was to create a massive bank that has low interest and is funded by the government as well as rich celebrities who can advertise their products. I scaled this product toward the HOW? side as it seemed like it could work, but it doesn't seem logical.

After doing this exercise we went back into our groups and did the same process for our problem which is online shopping but unfortunately, this lesson ended before we could plot it. This process is a great way to tweak ideas and make them better, so we will definitely be using this next lesson

However, this day had some benefits with our group thinking of our Innov8 project. Our problem was to solve unjust size clothing with an AI scanner that gives you the right fit. This idea is in a workshop but can definitely be a great idea.

Even though this idea was good, upon reflecting this idea now, I feel we should have implemented a lot more strategies such as Divergent and Convergent thinking to try and create more innovative ideas.

We then used the SCAMPER to try and refine our idea and add anything that could be useful. I won't give every idea that we had, but the one that stuck out to us the most was combining our app with Chat-GPT (AI). By combining these two things, we could allow the users to get recommendations based on the AI, as well as clothing that you can see on yourself that looks realistic, in real-time.

1. How might we simplify the online clothing shopping experience to better replicate the tactile and visual aspects of in-store browsing, enhancing customer satisfaction?

Through this lesson, we did our tasks and what we needed to finish. My task was to complete the introduction and create a catchy hook that brought the judges in. A customer profile was then created as your average teenager to create relevancy between the product and its target audience. Having this customer profile is crucial for identifying the problem and clearly explaining to the audience how this can be applied to them.

To then introduce the problem, I added that there was no current solution for people to try on clothes, with statistics on the following slides about how unhappy people were. Now that a target audience and the problem have been stated, the solution can be added.

Though we already might be doing some of these, we need to improve these aspects to create a better pitch

Making posters would be the longest task to complete, so after we finished planning, I made a brief start on what it would look like.

One huge issue we found however was that our printing was bugged and we need assistance in getting it fixed. If we hadn't trial printing, we would have faced this issue on the day meaning that we may not have had anything printed and just an empty stall.

After all the trials were done, we printed all the posters and pamphlets and business cards out as well as cut/folded and prepare them for thursday.

• Strengths:

  • The product was presented and delivered very well

  • We understood our project which made it much more effective at marketing

  • Having a prototype helped envision what the product would be like

  • We made minimal errors when pitching our product

• Areas for Improvement:

  • Reading from a script seems boring, memorizing it could have helped us engage the audience more

  • We didn't prepare for the final pitch, so the presentation looked a bit messy

To Solve these Problems:

   • Techniques such as chunking or mnemonics could be used

   • Continuously seek and incorporate feedback from peers, mentors, and potential users.

   • Use feedback to make iterative improvements to both the product and the pitch.

Looking back, we created some feedback for ourselves when creating posters in the future

Things that need to be improved on

• Visual Balance: Ensure the visual elements are balanced. The current layout is effective, but slightly more spacing or alignment adjustments might enhance the overall aesthetic.

• Contact Information: Include contact information or social media handles for users who may have questions or want to follow the brand for updates.

  
  

• The poster was confusing as it was hard to interpret

• The colours and statistics didn't match

• There was an arrow in the middle for no reason, adding to the cluelessness.

To fix this problem, we made the rating simpler by creating two colours that correlated with the descriptions on the bottom. The poster now looks much more interpretable and aids our product a lot more
