I will also provide sentence examples and visuals so that they can understand the vocabulary in a different way. I believe that teaching vocabulary before reading books is important because it will make the reading process more comprehendible for students. On the final day of instruction, I will ask students to write their own story whether it is a narrative story, a rhyming (non-fiction) text, or informational. When writing this story, they will be required to use at least a few key vocabulary words so that I can measure their understanding. The "other" vocabulary words below are words that I find important for students to know as well. When completing the final assignment, these words will not be required in their writing. Instead, before reading the texts, I will expose students to the "other" words in addition to the key vocabulary words.

Other:
~Pattern: something that repeats in a predictable way.
~Axis: the center around which something rotates.
~Rotation (spins): a single complete turn
~Compass: an instrument that has a magnetic needle to indicate direction pointing toward the north.

Stella Princess of the Sky
By Marie-Louise Gay

Stella and Sam decide to camp under the stars and explore the wonders of the natural world. They see that the "sky is on fire" with its luminous glow, the sun, the stars and the moon. As they discover different animals, Sam wonders where the sun sleeps, if the moon can swim, or if he can catch shooting stars with his butterfly net. Stella, graciously answers his questions and teaches him about the sun, the moon, and the stars. This text can be used to introduce how the sun and moon move in the sky. It can also be used as an introduction to direction such as using the North Star to find the North Pole. Vocabulary terms used in this book include: Sun, Moon, Stars, and North Pole.

Faces of the Moon
By Bob Crelin
Illustrated by Leslie Evans

Faces of the Moon focuses more on the Moon and why it seems to change shape from night to night. The playful poetry helps introduce the moon and describes its different names. The cut-outs in the pages show the shapes of the lunar phases such as waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, and the waning crescent. In addition, the illustrations help explain the role light and shadow play. This text can be used to introduce the phases of the moon and explain how and why it shows its shape on specific days. It can also be used as an example of using poetry for teaching information. Teachers should encourage students to read different forms of literature.
Vocabulary terms used in this book include: Moon, Sun, Orbit, and Earth.
