Blended learning is an educational model that combines face-to-face and virtual teaching and learning processes. The virtual component takes place remotely using a device such as a mobile phone, computer, or tablet. It is characterized by giving students control over the timing, location, itinerary, or pace of their learning.

You might be familiar with this model under names like b-learning, hybrid learning, or liquid learning.

The innovation of blended learning encompasses various aspects of learning: the way students work and communicate, the interaction between teachers and students, and the roles they play in the process. Students' roles become more active as they take responsibility for their learning, fostering autonomy.

Blended learning also implies a shift in the teaching role: the teacher's function is not just to provide knowledge but to guide students in the acquisition process. That's why we talk about tutors or guides who support students in their learning.

Wondering if blended learning can replace traditional learning? In this post, you'll understand that it's not about substitution but integration. Yes, because blended learning is the smooth, coordinated, and planned integration of teaching and learning wherever it occurs. New rules of the game are set in motion.

What does 'blended learning approach' mean?

The blended learning approach goes beyond using new technologies in teaching. It's not about transferring content from the physical world to the digital world, duplicating information, but about creating a learning experience that integrates the best of both methodologies.

This approach requires planning and designing educational processes that will be distributed between the physical and virtual classrooms. Teachers will create content with materials and activities for students to develop outside the classroom.

An innovative model

Blended learning aligns with new educational models, enabling different aspects of current approaches, such as the use of new technologies, self-management, and responsible decision-making. It's an approach that not only emphasizes learning curricular content but also the development of other competencies and skills.

More specifically, blended learning:

Enables personalized and meaningful learning experiences. Students progress based on their reality, interests, characteristics, motivation, and achievements.

Aligns with learning standards, meaning the knowledge, competencies, and skills that correspond to each subject according to the grade.

Focuses on mastery learning. The use of digital media allows obtaining all the necessary evidence for learning analytics.

Aims for the optimal development of each person's potential, fostering talent. Everyone has talent; everyone can achieve it.

Emphasizes interpersonal relationships. Teachers guide, students are protagonists, and a collaborative space is created that is a genuine learning community.
