One important motif of 13 Reasons Why is stealing. In the novel, Tyler steals Hannah's privacy by stalking her and taking pictures of her, Justin steals her reputation from her, Ryan steals her Poem and sense of expression, and Zach stole the encouragement notes students would leave her. This motif continues to show up throughout the entire book and Hannah makes the connection that people have taken her for granted. Hannah belived that people stole the real her away and stole her life away from her therefore.

Another symbol of 13 reasons why is the photograph that Tyler took of Hannah and Courtney. When Hannah find out Courtney was using her as a good gossip story, Hannah made Tyler take a picture of the two of them together in which hannah was laughing. When Hannah looked back on the picture she realized how fake she actually was and how people would view the picture. She realized that people on knew of her what was on the surface and not really her. Tyler's photo represented the twisted lies that ended her life.

I chose this photo because the overall motif of the novel was stealing. Each person on the tape stole something from Hannah and never thought it would be what killed her. They all stole a piece of Hannah and it is why she left the tapes because she knew it was unjust for them to take advantage of her. They underestimated Hannah and when they did somethingto hurt her, they stole a piece of her with them until Hannah had nothing left and nothing to live for.

“And Justin, honey, stick around. You’re not going to believe where your name pops up next.” (Asher, 50)

This is foreshadowing in the novel and it tells us that Justin has played a very important part and everything and we will find out something. This makes the reader keep reading to find out what Justin was apart of.

"Or maybe you've never seen the scar. But I see it every morning when I get ready for school. "Good Morning, Hannah," it says. And every night when I get ready for bed. "Sleep tight." (Asher, 68)

This is an example of personification. Hannah is telling us about the scar Jessica gave her when she slapped her and how it reminds her of what happened every time she looks in the mirror.

Like driving along a bumpy road and losing control of the steering wheel, tossing you—just a tad—off the road. The wheels kick up some dirt, but you’re able to pull it back. Yet no matter how tightly you grip the wheel, no matter how hard you try to drive straight, something keeps jerking you to the side. (Asher, 194)

This is an example of a metaphor. Hannah is comparing losing control of her life to driving a car and how difficult it is to stay on the right path when everything else is pushing her off.

“We took our place in the stream of students heading to the party like joining a bunch of salmon heading upstream to mate.” (Asher, 151)

This is an example of a simile. Hannah compares the student that are channeling into the party to salmon because of how many their were.

"You needed someone's name to put down opposite jessica's. And since everyone at school already had a perverted image of me after Justin's little number, I was the perfect choice wasn't I? And the snowball keeps a-rollin'. Thanks, Justin." (Asher, 41)

The snow ball effect is an example of a metaphor. Hannah uses the throughout the novel to say that one lie about her reputation caused a chain of effects that kept adding on and finally got to be too much.

1.) Justin Ruins her reputation and allows Jessica to be raped by Bryce at the party
2.) Jessica ends their friendship
3.) Alex starts dating Jessica and made a vulgar list with Hannah's name on it
4.) Zach steals her encouragement notes
5.) Jenny hits a stop sign and causes a teenager to die but refuses to go to the police
6.) Ryan steals her private poem and publishes it in the school newspaper
7.) Tyler stalks her and takes pictures of her when she's home alone
8.) Marcus takes her out on Valentine's Day and attempts to have sex with her because of her reputation
9.) Clay never tells her how he really feels
10.) Courtney spreads rumors about her and asks her to a party so she won't hate her
11.) Bryce rapes her
12.) Mr. Porter fails to acknowledge the fact she told him she wanted to her life to end

I chose this topic as my list because this is the very list of people and occurrences that caused a Hannah Baker to commit suicide. The whole storyline is based on 13 cassette taped that Hannah Baker left listing all the reasons people have taken her for granted and how the ruined her life and causes he to do what she did. The box of cassette tapes have been passed around to 12 people as they have been told to listen to what what she has to say. Everyone except Clay has denied that they had anything to do with her decision but Clay is determined to show them how poorly they treated her. This list itself was the main topic of the novel and shows great importance.

I chose this Image because the names on the list itself in the book is who is to blame for Hannah's death. She left the names of all the people who didn't treat her well and took advantage of her. She wanted them to know what they did and how it effected her since they saw the fake Hannah on the outside. The list itself is a symbol for the end of her life as the contents of the list is the cause of her death.
