We often see news about racially motivated events, but those often seem far away and we deny that that could ever happen to people we know, or cities we live near. I naively believed that an incident like this would ever happen so nearby, with people being so openly and blatantly racist and no one attempting to stop them. I am infuriated that Makai Brown's father was kicked out of the game for trying to stand up for what's right. He was just trying to protect his son, and was punished as a result. Furthermore, the body shaming that the cheerleader had to withstand absolutely breaks my heart. That kind of behavior can lead to low self-esteem and eating disorders, and I know firsthand how hard it can be to cope with matters like that. Truthfully, Irvine is an upper-income, educated city---we are sheltered by the harsh realities of prejudice here. It shows the sheer power of hate and shows that it's still very much an issue today. It's really upsetting to me that racism isn't an issue that can be solved with a detailed proposal. Poverty? Preventing racism is a subject touched on in the article, but it’s one of the harder things to reach for. People are always left to their free will, so it’s unfortunately extremely hard to prevent and end racism from occurring. However, steps can be made, and I feel like educating students is a great first step, but as the article mentioned this ignorance can be generational. There are parents and adults out there that can also set a good example for their children, instead of fostering a sense of “secured racism”, as in racism even in private.
