Overwhelmingly, the song's tone is critical of the Vietnam War and the actions committed by those within it, and it takes great care in repeating each of the horrors to reaffirm this critical position in the mind of listeners.

Wilfred Owen also maintains a critical tone of the war and frequently utilises harsh language to unveil the harsh truths of conflict. A prime example of this comes in Dulce et Decorum est where, in the final stanza alone, Owen uses descriptions of "froth-corrupted lungs" that are "obscene" and "bitter", as well as "vile, incurable sores".
Against lyrics detailing "bullet shocks", "throbbing meat", and being "ripped open", both authors are clearly comfortable with revealing the horrors of war.

While there are connections to Wilfred Owen's poetry throughout this song, there are few similarities in who they are addressing, as Wilfred Owen's poetry doesn't address a protest scene surrounding the war. Instead he often targets individuals or higher ranked army officials with similar criticisms, especially in stanza six of 'Insensibility' when Owen calls those in the army who aren't on the front line "dullards whom no cannon stuns" and "Wretched and mean", which is similar to how the protestors in 3500 criticise the American army at war and those who are forcing them to be there.
