First, we arranged a plan to meet at the Administration office to see Ms. Dawn, who would guide us to the appropriate school staff for our volunteer work. We followed instructions provided by the school staff as we assisted them clean around the campus. Next we divided into groups consisting of one volunteer (us) and one staff member to clean the designated hallways and classrooms. We were given equipment such as a mop, bucket, trash package, broom, sanitizers to carry out the cleaning the duty. The operation took 4 hours to finish.

The volunteer experience helps us appreciate the work of school staff and janitors. Even though at first we paid a little to no attention to them everyday but they are the people who keep our campus clean everyday. Through volunteering, we get to see the insight of workers behind the scenes, giving us a deeper understanding of effort that the school staff put in to keep an adequate environment inside campus. For every classroom I cleaned, I felt a deep sense of admiration to the staff members who have been working for years inside our school. And after the voluntering experience, the sight of a clean, spotless classroom makes me realize how dedicated the staff members work to put in the effort of making an enviromentally-friendly campus that we have.The volunteer work also gave us a chance to explore classes and hallways that we have never been before and enjoy the sunset in the campus view.

My volunteering experience allowed me to not only help out the community but it has allowed me to understand the people who have to contribute and help out the community regularly. Volunteering is no easy job and should have the most amount of effort put into it, the person who supervised me said that he would not finish cleaning the campus until 11:30 pm which really made me have more respect and admiration towards people who help out the community. I decided to volunteer to clean the school campus because I thought about how I wanted a cleaner environment for my fellow students and a place where students can say that their favorite school is. Near the end of my volunteer work, I felt very exhausted and fatigued but the thought of helping out the community allowed me to continue to work hard.

We came up with the idea to help and give support to our school community by helping out the staff members to clean the campus. With a deep appreciation for their hard work and diligence to help our school stay clean, we look forward to contributing our effort to the community and help out the staff members.

Ask Mrs. Lawler if we can go to Administration to ask if we can volunteer to help clean the school campus
Plan a day to volunteer that works for everyone in our group
Pick a date for when we can all meet up to clean the campus and that is available with the school’s schedule
Wear comfortable clothes for cleaning
Follow the directions of volunteer leaders and maintenance. Ask questions if we are unsure about something.

This volunteering experience allowed me to learn more about my school. Before this experience, I was unaware that students were allowed to volunteer to help the maintenance staff after school. I chose to participate in this volunteering to try something new and benefit my school. While volunteering, I met some of the night crew maintenance staff. Working with a staff member taught me about their job and what teachers, students, and staff can do to maintain a clean school. One of the tasks I was given was to sweep trash up from the classroom floors. After sweeping up food crumbs, I understand why many teachers don't allow students to eat messy food in class. One of the classrooms I cleaned had carpet flooring. Even small pieces of paper were hard to clean up. Overall, I am delighted and grateful for having this opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and try something new I wouldn't have normally done.

A connection to The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind and the obstacles we faced is when William Kamkwamba used the mantra, "I tried, and I made it", to face obstacles he faced in life. He didn't let setbacks stop him from achieving his goals. Similarly, our group having trouble deciding on a date didn't stop us from eventually working together and picking a day to volunteer as a group.

A connection to All Quiet on the Western Front and our inspiration for our choice of volunteering is how some of the characters wanted to join WWI for the greater good of their country. A reason why our group chose to volunteer at our school and help clean was to make an impact in our community that we could see. Cleaning and maintaining a clean school is for the greater good of the school.
