good: most of the content has been really interesting and canvas has been mostly kept up to date and lots of resources for us to use. i also very much appreciate John saying it’s okay if we can’t do all of the work set each week, most of the other modules seemed to have been like you have to do the work no matter your circumstance when we are living through a pandemic etc. so i appreciate the understanding that sometimes we can’t always do all of the work no matter that we are at home all the time..

bad: following on from the last point ^ the workload is a lot for a pandemic when a lot of us don’t have access to the library and experience mental health issues.
i also think the feedback for the developing employability module was incredibly harsh and that module will likely bring my grade down depending on the no detriment and whether or not we can drop a third year module grade, also more clarity on that would be good!
I also don’t enjoy breakout rooms that are randomly allocated esp with people not on our course and in different years, i agree that we should be split into our year groups if we need to have breakout rooms cause i don’t feel we achieve a lot when none of us speak.
it’s obviously a very strange year for everyone, staff and students but sometimes it feels like we are being treated like we should just be okay when we aren’t and just be able to do loads of work when this lockdown is having really negative effects on some of us

good:

Everyone is working really hard to make things work. I appreciate the efforts. I like that John has put us in our own year 3 sport psych group. This should however be in place for all the other modules.

Concerns:
Having coursework assignments in the second semester along with expectations of completing a dissertation is ridiculous in my opinion. We were recently told that 2nd years now do the exam modules that we had last year in their 3rd year which in theory would give me them more time to work on dissertation submission as the exams would be in May long after diss’s are submitted.

For a group that is the first ever sport psych year, there is absolutely no consideration of our workload even more so with how the pandemic has impacted our usual working style. I’m so disappointed and I’m struggling to cope. I have no real idea if this is ok for me to say and i was wary of sharing. I want to stay anonymous.

Positives:

I appreciate all the resources and the weekly canvas pages for all modules. Thanks Jo, John, and Holli.

main feedback:

With year 3 always being known as the hardest year academically, I have completely suffered with all the disruption like many other. But more than anything else, the dissertation project has proved to be the biggest problem. I’m really not comfortable doing important Uni work whilst being at home as there’s so much that goes on in my house at the same time (i have a big and not really considerate family).

Back to the diss: Its huge project where in previous ‘normal’ years, students go through to make sure they are in the best possible position to start their diss e.g. each section is broken down and analysed in sessions so students are left comfortable and can then start to write. For example, I have personally not been taught how to do a literature review and I just feel like i’ve been thrown so far into the deep end with no real idea or guidance on how to do one. Whilst I appreciate the canvas page efforts, weekly sessions breaking things down or access to pre recorded sessions could have or should have been in place.

In normal years, other people have had ethical approval a lot earlier and thus can start data collection a lot earlier. I personally did not receive ethical approval till this semester. With the struggles of collecting primary data already apparent due to covid, i’m not sure that i’ll even be able to collect data and that i’ll have enough time to write up my project. Is there any support in this regard?

I appreciate everything done by the department this year and all the efforts by all the lecturers but for me this has been a glaring issue that hasn’t received recognition. I also want to state however that I completely realise this is a solo project and not much is taught. Anonymous please.

I really appreciate all of the work the lecturers have done and I understand things are super hard on them at the moment having to teach online and not have fully interactive sessions. However, I do feel as though some lecturers do not fully consider the stress students are going through and are still expecting too much. Sometimes it’s even too hard to login and listen to a lecture, though I feel as though we’d be reprimanded for not participating. Shitty internet is a thing and mine often cuts out mid lecture which cannot be helped but I feel as though absence from a session is not understood.

John is the only lecturer who has shown genuine care and consideration for us and has honestly been a lifesaver. We have been incredibly ignored with the dissertation module and left to figure things out for ourselves when we haven’t been taught the correct format of a dissertation, let alone actually producing one. John is my supervisor for my dissertation in which I consider myself incredibly lucky because he has been so caring and understanding when I haven’t been able to complete the work he’s set and has assisted me massively in my project. Holli is also another super helpful person and her sessions have been super fun and interactive, and honestly just easy to follow along.

I can second what’s already been said about struggling massively this year, online uni is a horrible experience and I don’t feel like we have been adequately helped to deal with this. I am still in winchester on my own and living away from my family and friends which is only worsening how I’m feeling about uni, which I’m sure many people can relate to, and honestly I would drop out if I could.

I also feel like marking and feedback on assignments has been incredibly vague and harsh, especially for Jo’s module. I read through the criteria after receiving my mark and honestly it didn’t feel like I had been given the correct grade. I didn’t quite understand the criticism given.

Breakout rooms have not been successful so far and only fuel feelings of anxiety because we are in groups of people we have never spoken to before. And often these groups do not speak either and so instead we’re sat in silence for 30 minutes making small talk. I just don’t feel as though they are a good use of time. Especially when we have to discuss for another 30 minutes back in the main call. Time seems precious at the moment with the workload we have and the extra time we have to take to figure out this dissertation and so wasted time is only becoming more and more frustrating.
