Phones or smart watches must be completely switched off (not just on ‘Airplane mode’, ‘flight mode’ or ‘do not disturb’ mode) and placed under the desk or in a designated area: Such items must not be kept in pockets. We would recommend that valuables such as a phone, smart watch, purse or wallet are left at home. If students bring them to the exam, they must:
- remove them from their person (e.g. take off their wrist, pockets or sleeves) - turn them off
- place them in the designated area

Remove any annotations, notes, paper, or post-it notes from texts: check dictionaries, statute books or other permitted texts to ensure that they are clean and free from any writing, highlighting or other notes. If students have more than one copy, they should only take the clean copy to the examination.

Check pockets and sleeves: there must be no notes, papers, phone, or any device that access or store information (such as a phone) left in pockets. Leaving ‘notes’ in pockets ‘accidentally’ is not an excuse

Make sure that hands/arms are clean and have no writing on them: if there is writing on hands/arms, the Invigilator MUST be told before the examination starts. In addition, students should not write on their hand/arm during the examination, as it raises the suspicion that there was writing on their hand/arm before the examination started.

Listen carefully to the Invigilator’s instructions and alert an invigilator as soon as possible if they think they have something non-permitted on their person: students are usually allowed to continue their examination

Put permitted stationery in a transparent pencil case: Pens, pencils and other permitted stationery items need to be in a transparent pencil case or clear plastic bag. Any correction tape/fluid (e.g. tippex) and notes should be removed.

Dress appropriately for the exam: some venues may feel warm and others may feel cooler, so consider wearing layers of clothing. Coats, jackets, or other outerwear cannot be worn in the examination and must be placed in the designated area.

Put belongings in the designated area: This includes any scarfs, hats, coats or jackets. Coats or jackets cannot be kept on the back of the chair.
