Mexico adopted a very risky and new strategy and this was to allow settlers settle in Texas. These settlers had to become Mexican citizens, convert to Roman Catholics, and follow the Mexican Constitution which constitutes no slavery. As this went on it resulted in the Anglo-Texans, American settlers in Texas, outnumbering the Tejanos six to one with a population of 30,000.

Stephen F.

The settler had not been keeping up with their part of the agreement. The settlers remained Protestants, smuggled in African Americans to do their work for them, and they felt unstable with the Mexican government. Then, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna took control and most of his ideas contradicted that of the Mexicans. He wanted a strong central government and wanted to lead by military. This angered many of the people in Texas leading to the Texas Revolt. The Texans then declared independence and became known as the Lone Star Republic but Santa Anna wasn't having this. They fought long and hard especially at the Alamo. This was a mass killing of the Texans but they wouldn't give up and the Sam Houston led Santa Anna's army into a trap eastward. This was a surprise attack destroying the Mexican army and killed 630 and injured over 730 soldiers.

Santa Anna - Leader of the Mexican army and fought for control over Texas in a long and horrible battle but in the end failed to take over Texas.

Sam Houston - Leader of the Texan army destroying the entire Mexican army leading to freedom of the Texans

When digging for gold miners dug deep tunnels and used beans to support the structure and pumps to drain any liquid that would otherwise be trapped. Not everyone in California was excited about the large-scale mines, in fact, a Californian newspaper was upset and complained that the mining makes a sturdy miner do a boring dull job while the owner of the mining company made profits off the miners work without having to put in any effort.

Due to the mining San Fransico grew quickly, it became THE major American city on the Pacific coast by the 1800s. This was because miners came to San Fransico to buy supplies, relax and even exchange their gold for cash. The Gold Rush had more effects on California than just the rapid growth of San Fransico. Settlers from the eastern United States became the majority of the population in California and as a result they heavily taxed foreign miners so they wouldn't want to mine and the Americans could keep more of the profit. Unfortonatly white miners were terrorizing and killing Native Americans who were already struggling as it was since they were loosing their land to the white settlers. As a result of the oppression many Native Americans became workers for the white men on their farms. Mariano Vallejo is a textbook example of this. He was the son of wealthy land owners and was even a general in the Mexican army. However he lost the majority of his land to white settlers and ended up living on the remains of his once grand farm until his death.

Eventually the settlers of California wanted the state to become an official part of the union, so in October of 1849 the leaders of the soon to be state held a convention and drew up the constitution of California. This document excluded all African Americans, no matter if they were enslaved or free. The majority of the population of California didn't want any African Americans living in the state of California.
