I think student needs to see and understand the bigger picture of learning milestones, possibly use the power of learning dashboards? An interactive visual dashboard can allow students and teaching staff a map of the progress of their goals (daily, units, course completion). Maybe this can help improves decision making, easy performance checks and provides at a glance visibility to help active learner.

In the past, I’ve been asked about -

Multiple marker - In some cases, assignments are required to have multiple markers. David O’brien has done a bit of work in this, but I don’t think it’s complete yet. Please contact him to find out.

Distribution of submitted assignments to markers – currently, some faculties create Marker Groups to distribute the submitted assignments to markers. It’s a manual task. I’m sure the system can do a better job. Unit Chair just need to tell the system who are the markers, and the system can then distribute the assignments among markers. The system can also show the progress of marking and how markers grade the submissions. Unit Chair can then decide if there is any moderation required.

Basic Functionality upgrades

Many of the tools need some revision to improve functionality. Here are some on my wish list.

The view as student function does not work (reported 2022). This is very frustrating if you just want to quickly check how a content page or activity looks in the student view.

Need an option for private groups/sections for administrative purposes where students cannot see they are enrolled in it or see other students in that group. While the accommodations feature is nice, it is not a solution for managing things such as special access, extensions or marking groups for large cohort units (think +500 students)

The groups landing page for the staff view needs an option to summarise all groups rather than default to the last viewed group and a drop down. We have many groups categories in large cohort units. Also consider a visual representation of or at least additional advice around enrolment type as well. This is a regular source of confusion for many academics each trimester, particularly when used in conjunction with the Restrict Enrollments to option.

We also need to be able to choose to block certain groups from having the maximum set "groups of #". There are many use case examples where the majority of groups will have the set number e.g. 10 but 4-5 groups will need to be constrained to reduced number because of some kind of resource limitation. At the moment, we are blocking those spaces with dummy student accounts. This is added admin layer.

Need greater analytics - front and centre. The view reports option as an example is useful but hidden away. The class progress and individual student progress tools are also nice but need to provide more details and allow us to set criteria to trigger automatic notifications for the teaching teams independently of running intelligent agents e.g. who has not logged in, not viewed weekly content, not attempted a nominated hurdle task

Whilst on Intelligent agents, this is a fantastic tool but the set up needs to be simplified. Academics should not have to click on hyperlinks to see additional information or leave that page to set up a reply setting or do a practice run. They also need to see what the students will received.

Moving, creating and deleting modules, submodules and content is not straight forward for all users.

The managed files section is quite simply a dogs breakfast. Most academics will not visit the managed files or file things in an appropriate folder which then causes issues finding resources later and with out of control storage after years of rolling over content. Moving, deleting and coping is also cumbersome for the average academic. More can be done to simplify and automate or at least prompt users to choose the path when saving.

The bulk edit tool for quiz, Assignment and grades is useful but needs some upgrades. You should be able to create a new category directly within the tool, without needing to leave the bulk edit page (which you can do in quizzes but not the others). You need to be able to bulk edit dates in quizzes which you can do in Assignments. It would also be useful if the "More Actions" to reorder, delete and hide were also more prominent. There are many clicks.

The insert Quicklink is great but adding a module or submodule using the plus symbol is not obvious to all users.

In built up-to-date D2L help guides links for staff with video demonstrations when they click on the help buttons and help available in sub-screens of the tools. For example, there is a help button for assignments but when you open a new assignment, there is no help for features within the tool e.g. for special access, release conditions or within a rubric.

Option for users to set their own screen themes e.g. dark or high contrast within the tool rather than on the browser.
