The 18th FINA World Championships Gwangju 2019 was held in Gwangju from July 7 to 28, 2019. 6 events includes swimming, diving, high diving, artistic swimming, open water, water polo was held in Nambu University, Yeomju Sports Complex, Chosun University, and Yeosu Expo ocean park. 

   

It’s not decided yet, but the 2025 World Archery Championships may be held in Gwangju. World Archery Federation live-action team gave a favorable evaluation about Gwangju’s preparation condition, capability of holding the competition and citizen’s aspiration for holding the competition.

   

There are Jinwol international tennis court, Yeomju Sports Complex, World Cup Stadium, Gwangju Girls’ University City Universiade gym in Gwangju.

   

The World Cup Stadium was originally planned to build more facilities including baseball stadium, in conjunction with Yeomju Sports Complex, but it was cancelled because of financial crisis. As a result, it opened only soccer stadium, so it can be disadvantage for people should have to move to enjoy other sports than soccer and track and field, though it is close to World Cup Stadium, In addition, the World Cup Stadium was used as Gwangju FC’s home stadium until 2020, but the home stadium was moved to Gwangju Soccer exclusive stadium which is located in next to it, so the number of citizens coming to watch soccer games might be decrease.

Suggestion about future international sports events should be hosted in Gwangju :

The 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup soccer competition, 2015 Summer Universiade, and the 18th FINA World Championships 2019 were held in Gwangju. As the internation sports events have already been held in Gwangju three times, more events could be held in Gwangju. There are 30 public sports facilities and the number of it would be increase when combining other sports stadium in universities. The types are also various, including volleyball, tennis, baseball, archery, swimming, soccer, kendo, and golf, so there are no flaws in holding various international sports events. In addition, transportation is not also very complicated. There are buses directly go to Yeomju Sports Complex and World Cup Stadium from Gwangju Bus Terminal or Gwangju Airport. 

In addition, not only sports facilities, Gwangju is an area where the 5.18 pro-democracy movement took place, so there are many historical attractions including 5.18 Freedom Park and 4.19 Revolution Memorial Hall. 

It would be nice if various international sports events in Gwangju, but among them, volleyball, archery, and baseball which are well-prepared enough to have a exclusive stadium should be hosted in Gwangju.
