He also ended slavery with his Emancipation Proclamation, and eventually the Fifteenth Amendment. Lincoln had a reconstruction plan for the South as well. Unfortunately he was not able to carry this plan out, as he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 15th, 1865.

The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was the first terrorist group in the United States. Founded by Nathan Bedford Forrest, the group at first was only aiming to instill fear into African-Americans. However, they eventually took to more brutal and violent acts, such as lynching, beating, and burning African-Americans. The KKK was compromised of white people who believed they were superior to other races.

After the Civil War, African-Americans were given their freedom. However, the Southern states were still bitter about their loss. Due to the fact they still believed in slavery, they created "black codes", which restricted African-American's rights. Some of which included the right to vote, gave them lower wages, and other unfair things.

After the death of Abraham Lincoln, the Fifteenth Amendment was passed by Congress. It stated that all men, including African-American men, are given the right to vote. This amendment finally gave African-American's a right they had long deserved. However, this did have unintended side effects. People such as Andrew Johnson and the Ku Klux Klan were against this movement, and did whatever they could to stop it.
