Having a better understanding of my leadership style will allow me to know what to improve upon and what to build on. As part of my TUS self-development plan, I set a goal to become more aware of racial injustice in the health care system.  As I reflect on this goal, I believe I have gained a greater understanding of these injustices and prejudices within the health care system. Through following various social media accounts that highlight these prejudices and listening to podcasts about these issues, I have been able to gain a broader perspective on diverse perspective in the healthcare system. According to my Student Leadership Practice Inventory results, my leadership style reflects the encourage the heart style. This indicates I am good at encouraging and inspiring others and celebrating their wins. As a collegiate softball player and captain, my results showing encouraging the heart are accurate. It can be very difficult to focus on celebrating the team's successes over your own when playing a team sport. To achieve a group goal, I had to learn how to foster a sense of community and create relationships that are meaningful and personal to each person. I scored the lowest in the challenging the process style. Hence, I can conclude that I lack a willingness to experiment and take risks. Being someone who doesn't like to fail, I anticipate that will be an area of growth for me as a leader as I move forward. The weakness of my encourage the heart style is that I forget to encourage myself. As a leader, I need to be able to lead others, but I can't lead others if I don't feel like one myselft. Particularly for someone who wants to become a pediatrician, it is important that I can be a good role model and leader for children. I also intend to coach in the Special Olympics local teams in the future, so I'll have to understand how I can best serve this community by being a leader of the team. According to the Dan Beverly worksheet, my most developed leadership style is affiliative. Based on this, I value harmony and meaningful relationahips. I enjoy helping others achieve their highest potential through empathy and self-awareness. I lead by putting people first. The affiliative style is similar to my highest ranking in the LPI test of encouraging the heart. Both styles value meaningful and quality relationships. Coercive is the leadership style that I scored the lowest in. This tells me I struggle with discipline and confrontation. The ability to handle confrontations with my co-workers is an area of improved. I would like to do more research about how I can use my leadership style to my advantage. For the benefit of my occupational therapy career, I will use my leadership style to create meaningful connections with my co-workers. By becoming more aware of my faults as a leader, I'll be able to become a better occupational therapist.
