The speaker expresses what seems to be mad is actually quite the opposite, pure sanity. Though, only those in society who can understand the world reasonably will be able to clearly see this. That said, what is considered to be typical or practical is the absolute worst type of madness. The speaker then explains a flaw in most of the status quo kept in a major part of society which always triumphs. If you agree with the norms of society, then you are logical and sensible. However, if you disagree with these norms, you become a threat towards society. Disagreeing will cause you restraint, whether it be on the body or mind.

The tone does not really change throughout the poem; the tone is frustration. Emily Dickinson was frustrated with the ones who did not understand her sanity.
Frustrated tone: “Much madness is divinest Sense” (line 1), “To a discerning Eye” (line 2), “In this, as all, prevail” (line 5), “Demur - you’re straightway dangerous” (line 7), “And handled with a Chain” (line 8).

Madness and Conformity: Those who are seen or treated as mad actually see things more clearly and vice versa, than those who claim to have sense. People who may believe they are normal and fit in with society's norms are more mad then the people they claim to be mad.

Ex: “Demur – you're straightway dangerous”, a metaphor for a threat in society.

Personification - “discerning Eye”, giving the eye the ability to discern or understand.

Alliteration: /m/ sound - “Much Madness”, “Much Sense - the starkest Madness” - Meaning madness is sense and sense is madness

Consonance: The /m/, /s/, and /n/ sound - “Much Madness is divinest Sense -” (line 1) “Much Sense - the starkest Madness” - (line 3) “Assent - and you are sane -” (line 6)
